Managing Challenges using Mind-Mapping

Here are some of my challenges.  Make a list of the things that come to mind when you think of all the things you are taking on right now.  What is holding you back?

  1. Dealing with difficult people
  2. Being assertive without being labelled a “bitch”
  3. Managing stress
  4. Keeping up a positive image, managing perceptions
  5. Staying Organized
  6. Communication (communicating clearly with others)
  7. Multi-tasking and completing projects
  8. Self-sabootage, facing fears and following through
  9. Contintued personal growth
  10. Letting go (of things that no longer matter)
  11. Saying “No” – prioritizing
  12. Continued professional development
  13. Reaching Goals, facing my fear of success
  14. Increasing efficiency
  15. Managing finances

Whew!  That’s a lot!  It is not a check list.  It is a reality list.  I believe knowing the things that are tugging on the back of my mind can help me to set a clear path to what I want.  I use this technique to achieve my goals.  A list is a mind-dump.  It isn’t in any order.  It may not include everything.  It is just what I put on the list.  Mind-mapping is so much more.

If you are creative, like me, your thoughts and ideas don’t always come in the form of a list.  They don’t even fit on a calendar.  Sometimes it feels like the ideas flow through me and other times it feels like they are coming at me from all directions. Mind-mapping is a way to organize your thoughts in a creative way that uses both sides of your brain.  Yes! You can be organized and creative at the same time!

I will be giving a workshop on how to use mind-mapping for setting goals and improving your blog (or other projects) and applying these principles to maintain a balanced lifestyle.  If you have questions for me, please put them in the comments.  I will address these questions at the workshop and on the blog.

Keep an eye out for my next post on mindfulness.  I will be taking an in depth look at cognitive behavior therapy and how positivity impacts life balance.

The #1 Thing That I Am Excited About Today

Three Things That I Am Excited About: Day 5 #NHBPM

Lucky for me, my heart speaks up now and then to remind me that I am not a complete slacker. I believe that God doesn’t give you more than you can handle. I have lots of great news and many accomplishments to be proud of. During the past year that I have been maintaining my Diabetes, I have not had any serious episodes and I always take my meds. However, I am excited about the fact that I have successfully weaned myself off of my anti-depression and anxiety medicine and now manage that holistically. I have completed an online course and received my certificate for life coaching. I have attended a blogging conference and have maintained my blog while increasing my readership and have been published on a national online magazine.

Managing Depression Holistically

I am a strong proponent of prescribed medication because it has saved my life and my sanity many times. I have a chemical imbalance that causes me to worry needlessly. The chain reaction that results from that worry leads to stress induced insomnia, migraine headaches, digestive problems, cysts, depression, and the worst thing ever, anxiety attacks. All of which results in a myriad of other serious problems and issues, including but not limited to missing work and problems within my relationships. After dealing with all of these issues separately for many years, I finally found the golden combination of counseling, medical advice and prescription medication that worked for me.

A healthy balance is key. Knowing how far I can tip to the sides without falling down is vital. Getting help before I fall is imperative. Knowing myself and anticipating when things might get too difficult for me has been what has made it possible for me to manage the diagnoses of depression and anxiety. It is a disease. It can be managed. For me, it is triggered by outside influences. Right now, everything is going well in my life, with my family, my job, everything. So, I am not in counseling. I am not taking medication. I am able to maintain balance with relaxation techniques, mantras, and writing. I know that if something (when something) happens that is beyond my control and capabilities, I can and will return to the resources I have for help. My doctors are there for me. In the meantime, I love the feeling of freedom from the meds.

It’s nice to see my destination ahead, with a straight path leading right to it!

I like being on my own. I still have mood swings, episodes of mild depression, anxiety, and headaches. I try to recognize the cycles and the symptoms as they come. I try to accept them and not let it get to me. That is all part of my holistic approach.

Life Coaching

Becoming a life coach is a huge accomplishment for me. Having reached a healthy balance in my own life has helped me to see how important that is to experience happiness. I have always wanted to be able to help others. All my life people have been able to open up to me and I am grateful for the ability that I have to listen and encourage them. I have been challenged a few times. I have been asked, what gives me the authority to coach or counsel others. I did not have an answer for that. My catechetical and leadership training had been enough when I was ministering at my church and in faith circles. Yet, I longed to be able to help all people in a non-denominational setting.

I have always challenged myself and felt that there was something I could do professionally with my talents. I just wasn’t sure what exactly or where I would take it.  I found the answers with becoming a certified professional life coach. I am now educated in the techniques and methodologies taught by Fowler Wainwright Institute of Professional Coaching. For now, since I am gainfully employed, I plan to practice coaching on the side to help people, to enhance my writing, to lead workshops and retreats, and to build a practice that I can fall back on when I eventually retire. Having a solid plan is like taking a breath of fresh air! It feels amazing and propels me forward, and that is the best direction!

Blogging

This week I am celebrating my one year anniversary of blogging. I have had my blog on WordPress since 2007 and have been posting articles (136 of them to date) on it consistently for about one year. That makes this my first “blogiversary!” I am very proud of all of the writing I have done, but mostly I am happiest about the unforgettable people I have encountered on this journey. They have changed my life for the better with their encouragement and love. In my 100th post article, I highlighted each turn of my journey and linked to many of the people who, like lampposts, have lighted my way along my path.

In celebration of my blogiversary, I would like to share the links to a few of my favorite blogs. Join me in the celebration and take a look at what these phenomenal women are writing about:

I Have Been Meaning To Do It

Fulfilling Commitments

I have been meaning to call you.

I have been meaning to visit.

I have been meaning to read your blog.

I have been meaning to work on that article.

I have been meaning to organize my files.

I have been meaning to clean the hall closet.

I open the cupboard in the kitchenette at the office and I say to myself, “I have been meaning to bring in some coffee mugs.”

Now I am doing it to myself.  Selling myself short.  Breaking promises to myself.  Letting myself slide.  It starts out small.  It becomes acceptable.  Next I will be doing it big time.

I have been meaning to pay that bill.

I have been meaning to get an oil change.

I have been meaning to have a gathering with my family.

I have been meaning to cook his favorite meal.

I must change this and soon! I need to honor my commitments, to my family, to my friends, to my debtors, to myself.  Honoring commitments is so important.  Fulfilling promises to myself is vital.  If I can’t fulfill a promise to myself, how can I expect others to depend on me?  How can I expect others to trust me?

I trust myself.  I know I will do these things.  I meant to do it.  I know I meant to!  Sometimes going with the flow, taking one thing at a time, not sweating the small stuff, and living in the moment becomes an excuse to not get things done.  Okay, an excuse is a bit harsh.  I am talking about myself and my experience, so I know I can take it.  I honestly believe it is best for me to go with the flow, because if I don’t I will get worried and paranoid and depressed.  I put so much pressure on myself to get everything done, to do everything for others and right the world’s wrongs that I get sick.  Yes, I make myself sick.  I not only get disgusted with myself, I get physically and emotionally ill.

Not completing things and letting all the intentions pile up makes me ill, too.  So, what is a girl to do?  I want to be in my Zen.  I want to be in control.  Cool. Confident.  I want to walk the walk and talk the talk.  Here is what I will do.  As soon as I hear the little voice say, “Oops, I meant to do that.”  I am going to do it.  No more saving for later, adding to my mental list, waiting for the next opportunity.  Fix it, buy it, take it, mail it, call, visit, pay, bring, make, and do it now.  Most likely, it will just take a moment.  Most likely, it will just happen naturally.  If I catch myself slipping and not taking action as I intend to, I won’t beat myself up over it.  But I will do my best to live up to my promises, fulfill my commitments and be my best self.

I mean it!

Let’s Talk About Life

Let’s Talk About Life and Keeping it ALL Together

Balancing and Thriving in a Busy Bubble

I am re-posting the details for my upcoming workshops.

Do you ever have that feeling that if you take on just one more thing, sign up for one more activity, open one more bill, join one more group, say “Yes” to one more request, or even respond to one more email that everything in your bubble will just pop?

Are you afraid that you will be left with nothing but a giant splattering of the things you cared about and won’t know how to piece it all together again? Maybe you have lost sight of your vision? Does going off on a tangent and forgetting what you were originally talking about sound familiar? If so, then stop and take a breath. It’s going to be okay! Really!

Let me help you refresh your memory and bring you back to the things that are most important to you. You can do it all! I’ll show you how to keep all the bubbles bouncing in the air. With some tried and true skills from the experts in my “light” version of How to Keep it All Together: Balancing and Thriving in a Busy Bubble I will share the techniques that I use to help you stay focused, balanced, and centered in everything you do. It all comes down to taking care of yourself and remembering to care for all sides of your multi-faceted amazing life.

Workshop participants will review organizational skills similar to those presented in my favorite self-development books by Don Miguel Ruiz, Gretchen Rubin, Steven Covey, Peter Bregman and others.  You may be learning how to organize on this level for the first time.  Together as a group we will explore what it takes to find a true balance. I have developed a system that works for me that is simple and guilt-free.  It is definitely worth trying anytime you are feeling overwhelmed.

In the small group sessions, you will experience music, videos, quotes, meditation, breathing exercises, and hands on projects that will help explain and implement the system. You will leave feeling refreshed, inspired and empowered to carry on your life’s dream of doing and having it all.

You can benefit from attending any or all of the sessions which are each designed to be like a “mini spa retreat”.  Get away from it all and do something for yourself!

I am so excited to be able to share my experience with you.  For several years now I have been asked how I do it all.  I somehow manage to raise my family, have a full time job, volunteer on fulltime projects, plan big events,  enjoy spending a considerable amount of time with my extended family and friends, continue my education, travel, write, blog, consult, coach, and have lots of fun – all the time!  I NEVER THOUGHT I would be the one saying this, not in A MILLION YEARS, but I can and do HAVE IT ALL.  I am blessed and grateful for everything and every thing that I have and do.  And guess what. . . I want more.  I want more experiences, more fun, and most of all, more ways to share what I know and what I am passionate about.

If you are at all interested in the worshop, mini spa retreats, or one on one sessions, let me know.  I would love to hear from you!  Ready to sign up?  Just click on the “Register Now” button.
