Everything Miz Meliz, Tell Me Something Good

I’m Engaged!

“I just can’t believe it!” Princess said to Mr. Sanders, her piano instructor. “Did you hear the news?”

“What is it? Did you practice your scales?” Mr. Sanders asked.

“My great great grandmother is engaged!” Exclaimed the young mouse.

“Oh, really?” He said cautiously. He always thought Melissa the Mouse would make a nice companion and tried to hide his disappointment that he missed out on a possibility. But he thought he knew the mouse well enough to know if she was involved with anyone and was surprised that she would be interested in getting married. He knew her to be quite independent. “Who is she marrying? This is exciting news for your family.” He said.

“I don’t know for sure yet.” Princess answered quietly.

“How do you know she is engaged?” he asked one more question, even though he knew he should be starting the lesson. He enjoyed his conversations with the bright young mouse and knew that she liked to talk to adults. He felt that she focussed more on her playing if he let her get it out of her system.

Princess opened up to the kind man and answered in a hushed tone, “I heard her talking to my mother about it. Mummy asked her why she works so much and she said she couldn’t help it if she was engaged. Do you think she is marrying a poor mouse Mr. Sanders?”

He did what he could to keep himself from laughing out loud! He let out a controlled sigh of relief and explained, “Miss Princess, when a mouse such as your great great grandmother Melissa the Mouse becomes involved in a project she puts in so much effort and gives all she can to help other mice, she becomes fully engaged in what she is doing. It doesn’t mean she is getting married. I’ve known her a long time and I am proud to say that is one of the admirable traits that she has always exhibited. I wish all my students would be equally engaged to their study of music!”

“Yes, Mr. Sanders. Maybe you should call Grandma-ma sometime. You have so much in common.” Said the perceptive young mouse and she began playing.

“Perhaps I shall, he replied. Now curve your fingers my dear.”

Mr. Sanders explains to Princess what it means to be “fully engaged.”

“When the deepest part of you becomes engaged in what you are doing, when your activities and actions become gratifying and purposeful, when what you do serves both yourself and others, when you do not tire within but seek the sweet satisfaction of your life and your work, you are doing what you were meant to be doing.”
