In “Life in Asymmetry,” author Raychel Kubby Adler educates women on the steps they can take to prevent or overcome breast cancer, especially if they have rare genetic mutations. Kubby Adler uses personal experiences, scientific research and genetic science to show what happens when your genes make you highly susceptible to breast cancer and other diseases.
Kubby Adler is the holder of the BRCA2 gene mutation, “previvor” of cancer and spends much of her professional and personal life researching health risks and educating the population about them.

Drew Waters (director of NEW LIFE)

Interview about Drew’s new film, NEW LIFE, releasing October 28

Drew Waters

When I asked Drew what he likes to do for fun when he isn’t working on films, he said, “I like to get friends together with my dog Cash and go up in the hill for a long hike or jump on my motorcycle and take a little road trip. Those things help me clear my head and re-center. Overall, my most favorite thing is hanging with family and friends.”

After service in the U.S. Navy, Drew Waters became well known for his three seasons on the Emmy winning series Friday Night Lights. His nearly 60 professional credits include NBC’s Surface, Chase and Victorious, AMC’s Breaking Bad and Major Crimes. Film credits include MAD MONEY, HOME RUN and the critically acclaimed PARKLAND with Paul Giamatti and Marcia Gay Harden. Starring roles include BREAKING THE PRESS, THE REDEMPTION OF HENRY MYERS and THE ULTIMATE LIFE.

14720488_681546265334332_2064442145070610574_nDrew produced and starred in the films HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT and CHARLIE: A TOY STORY. As producer, his projects include A Tale of 2 Soldiers and Art Junkies, a reality series he also directed for the BBC. Drew co-founded Argentum Entertainment with Erin Bethea.

I will talk to Drew about his new production philosophy and how he developed the story for “New Life” which opens in theaters this week. We will discuss how faith-based films are going “main-stream” and how a feel-good romance story never goes out of style.

Drew is a seasoned actor and producer. New LIfe is his first feature-writing credit as well as his directorial debut. I am thrilled to have this opportunity to interview him on Tinsel Town Live and see how he is making his transition to directing as he imparts the Argentum philosophy to make good movies with relate-able characters.

Here is an Overview of What to Expect on MizMeliz.com this Fall:

Books, Reviews, and Interviews

I will be reading quite a few books in the coming months and I am doing my best to schedule interviews with editors, authors and illustrators. I think it is fascinating that anyone can take their passion or expertise and make it into a book that can open up worlds of possibility for other people. They may never know first hand the impact their book will make on people far and wide and for generations to come. That’s the true power of influence! I’ll be diving into the worlds of Children’s Books, Children’s Technology and Learning, Parenting, Self-Care, Business, Health and Wellness, and Art and Creativity. Whew, that’s a lot! But you know what? These are all of my interests and it’s my blog. LOL! Seriously, if you would like to go on this journey with me, I am happy to share my discoveries!

Children’s Books

  • I am excited for my next interview with Bible Stories Through the Ages Children’s Book Series author, Jann Martin on Tinsel Town Live. On Tuesday, October 18th, I will have Jann as my special guest. Jann is in the group, Writer’s Chat on Facebook. I am looking forward to talking to her about her books and what it is like to publish children’s books. Hopefully, she will read a page or two! Jann just got through her first hurricane watch, and I am glad she is okay. Meet Jann on Tinsel Town!
  • Sally Loves…™ is a popular children’s book series by author and illustrator, Jody Mackey. I hope to talk to Jody about how Sally may have inherited much of her adventurous personality from Mackey herself— as she loves to compete in sports and other activities. She is a woman of many talents such as an Ironman triathlete, a runner, a cyclist, an equestrian and even a golfer. Sports have enriched her life, and so it seems only natural for her to share her experiences and inspire young children to be active through her books.415hpx3tg9l-_ac_ul320_sr250320_

Debut children’s book author Kat Kronenberg says, “it’s important that children feel empowered, and it’s up to us to let them know we support them not matter how big their dreams are.”

  • Kat knows how easy it can be to get bogged down by negativity when pursuing a dream. That’s why she is helping young children realize their dreams through songs, activities, games, and a new book aptly titled Dream Big. I love that phrase and use it often! So, of course I am excited about reading it. It will be fun to see what Kat shares with us on Tinsel Town Live!

Children’s Technology and Learning

  • Studies from The Joan Ganz Cooney Center show that high-quality, educational content delivered through mobile devices has the potential to increase a child’s ability to learn. PlayKids Learn’s UX/UI (a new app) was designed in collaboration with The Joan Ganz Center experts to optimize this learning potential.

Through content that includes Disney Imagicademy games and activities, kids can learn how to draw Mickey Mouse, Olaf, and more through guided tutorials or watch videos with iconic characters like Snow White and Hercules that help guide and teach young ones about the importance of exercise, the magic of creativity, how to make a good bedtime routine, and more. I am working closely with the publicist for this app, I will review it and interview the creators live on Tinsel Town!

Disney's legacy of learning and enriching the lives of families around the world continues with this app.

Disney’s legacy of learning and enriching the lives of families around the world continues with the PlayKids app.

“PlayKids intends to be a learning space and with relevant content like ImagiCademy on board, it helps us to drive this educational experience with quality and safety,” explained Eduardo Henrique, Head of Global Expansion at PlayKids. “Parents know they can turn to us for a safe, educational and entertaining place to laugh, play and learn with their kids.”

  • The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is on a mission to encourage girls around the world to join the tech workforce. We will discuss this topic on an upcoming episode of Tinsel Town because I strongly believe that young people would be encouraged to do what they are passionate about. Why are we all going back to our childhood dreams to fill our bucket lists with things undone? Let’s empower our children to reach for the stars and dream big, now.

Please watch this inspiring video:

Parenting

  • I will be receiving Patty Wipfler‘s LISTEN: Five Simple Tools to Meet Your Everyday Parenting Challenges soon. I am interested in talking to Patty about Hand in Hand Parenting and get her advice on parenting and communicating with teens.
  • Another book on my list is Raising Kids with Accountability by the bestselling father/daughter duo, John Miller & Kristin Lindeen! Their newest book is coming out in late October and I am crossing my fingers that I will get to interview them together! What an amazing experience it must be to write a parenting book with your own father. It almost brings tears to my eyes. I wish my parents knew that I published a book and I wish I had spent more time listening to their advice when I had the chance. Our parents are the only source of inspiration for parenting our own children – good or bad, we learn from them and their experiences. It will be very interesting to discuss this with the authors.

Self Care/Relationships

  • In “My Personal History: My Story,” author Janice Costello entrances readers with the story of how she became her best self. From love to death to rebirth, Costello is able to encourage readers to make the effort to change and embrace the person who is underneath it all. Costello believes in striving toward a greater goal and enjoying the accomplishments that follow. “My Personal History: My Story” holds the memories and journeys of Costello’s life, including the good and bad times. I can relate having gone through a similar journey in my own life. I am interested in reading this book and sharing stories with Janice. Bring some tissue to that episode!
  • Grief is something we all experience at some point in life. Anna Oginsky reminds readers with her new book “My New Friend, Grief” that embracing grief is not only part of life, but it makes us stronger and more appreciative of what we have. This is another subject that is close to my heart having lost both of my parents, my sister, and three of my best friends in a matter of a few years. I have written about grief myself on this blog and in my own book, This is the Sound of My Soul. It will be a bittersweet experience to revisit this topic as we discuss her new book when I have the opportunity to interview Anna. Since dying and death is a part of life, it is important – and I can’t stress this enough – to not only endure but to embrace it. We need to talk about it and prepare ourselves in terms of living each moment with integrity, grace, and love. It is okay to be friends with grief, everyone who has lost a loved one knows that grief is a familiar and often misunderstood “friend.” Those are the kind we should try and get to know better, right?
  • Another heart-wrenching topic is uncovered by Charlotte Canion, author of “You Have To Laugh To Keep From Crying:  How To Parent Your Parents.”  Charlotte joined the Hospice Plus Seniors and Caregivers Expo in Decatur, Texas recently. Multifaceted author and authority on the timely subject, she is preselling her new book at the event.

“We have to love our parents enough to find a way to care for them that is respectful to all of our needs,” said Canion.  “Being able to smile and to see the big picture is one important part of the story.  It’s my pleasure to share my own experience parenting my parents in my new book in the hopes that it helps bring strength to as many families as possible who are facing these challenges.”

When I interview Ms. Canion, I will ask her how her own strength helped her to come up with the solutions she presents in the book. I expect her to share how her inspiration came largely from things she learned from her own family and her Christian faith experiences.  For more information be sure to visit http://www.basketjacket. com/.

  • We may still be weeks away from the holidays, but it’s never too early to start to feel the stress from this “most wonderful time of the year.” In fact, 45 percent of Americans would prefer to skip Christmas (via Think Finance) all together and nearly 1 in 4 people feel extreme stress leading up to the holidays. So often we focus and obsess over giving the perfect gift, playing the perfect host, or making the most perfect holiday dinner – things we believe will make us happy. We reflect and dwell on resentments and on the people and things that frustrated or angered us during the year. We are often consumed by pettiness and completely miss that a new year lies ahead of us. We view ourselves as the center of the universe – referred to as perception disorder – and unfortunately, this is normal human nature for many of us. We all need guidance to develop the tools to appreciate our gifts this holiday season.

I will be hosting a support group on this very topic called, “The Holiday Hullabaloo” for the 2nd year in a row. People need a place to vent and ask questions. Is it normal to hate the holidays? Why can’t I “get into it”?

I am excited about the opportunity to discuss this with Charles G. Hanna, the highly successful CEO, philanthropist and author of the new book, Higher: Awaken to a More Fulfilling Life. Through his firsthand experience and his understanding of human nature, neuroscience, and life management, Charles, for the first time, is revealing his practical and achievable techniques, tips and tools so that everyone can apply the “higher” way and find holiday cheer this year. You will want to see this interview as we dive into the topics that may very well shape the focus of the group this year!

Some of the topics I hope to discuss with Charles include:

  • Tips to get a head start and not let the stress of the holidays creep up on you this year
  • Perception Disorder: What it is and signs you may be suffering from it this holiday season
  • Reaching a Higher State: What this means, and his top techniques that anyone can apply to get there
  • Why he believes happiness is a way of thinking and not the result of great achievement

What about love?

  • I will be interviewing the incredible Mr. Drew Waters (director) about his new film, New Life – it’s about love! Of course, I will ask Drew about his writing and directing process and how it relates to his acting experience. A main topic will be about his feelings about making “good” films with “relatable” characters. I’ve heard that the film NEW LIFE is actually promoting life in Africa and it’s helping support an orphans’ program. We will discuss Drew’s passion and purpose as his story unfolds…

Drew produced and starred in the films HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT and CHARLIE: A TOY STORY. As producer, his projects include A Tale of 2 Soldiers and Art Junkies, a reality series he also directed for the BBC. Drew co-founded Argentum Entertainment with Erin Bethea.

Drew’s latest venture is the film, New Life. NEW LIFE (Nouvelle Vie) is a film about hope. Benjamin Morton’s life changed forever the day he met the little girl next door.  Ava was and always would be the girl of his dreams. From the innocence of a childhood friendship, through adolescent attraction, their love strengthens and grows. When life takes a turn neither of them expected, their entire future is called into question.  NEW LIFE explores the ups and downs of life and love, showing us that in good times and bad, life can be approached with hope and the opportunity for something new.

Business

  • As we approach 2017, new business trends are quickly taking shape—including globalization. No company set on growth in the New Year can afford to ignore our increasingly borderless world of business. According to globalization and language expert Anna Schlegel, any business can go global, but they won’t all succeed. Now, she has mastered the science of globalization and is revealing the ultimate model for true international success.

“For a company to be truly global, there has to be a globalization master plan, thoroughly mapped out and followed like any other discipline,” says Schlegel, author of Truly Global. “You can’t wing it. The more you understand what globalization is, the more you will see how it can help your company grow and make real money.”

unnamedWhen I interview Anna Schlegel, we will discuss the essence of globalization: what it is, how to achieve it, and how it will establish significant ROI – this is something all people need to understand.  Globalization affects everyone. I am also interested in what Anna has determined to be a global content strategy that will help companies localize to any number of markers and locations. Since I have so many friends with small businesses and startups, I will ask Schlegel what they can do to prepare for international success!

Ten Mins in TinselTown w/ @AshleeMarieCake of @FoodNetwork Halloween Baking Championship

Posted on October 19th, 2015 by & filed under #SPARKLE Tinsel Town Tonight Interviews, Everything Miz Meliz, TenMiniTT 2015

I met Ashlee Marie on a field trip to a Ventura, California KOA campground. I was drawn to her by her cool hair color and gorgeous smile. She has an amazing energy and was very kind to me. I overheard her mention that she had just finished the taping of a show. I asked her about it. She said she couldn’t tell me exactly, but it would be aired in October and it was a cooking show.

It turns out that Ashlee is a contestant on Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship. The third episode was just on and I am excited to report that Ashlee has not been eliminated. I can’t wait to interview her and introduce you to her you.Untitled design

Watch it HERE:

Show Notes

I asked Ashlee what she likes to do when she is not baking. She said, “Read, I love to read, but I rarely have time anymore.”

When asked what she is most passionate about, she told me, “Obviously, I love to bake and cook, it’s still a favorite, especially when it’s just for fun and not always for work.”

Ashlee’s favorite things to do are playing board games with family and friends and she loves the beach, just the beach, sand, sun, and ocean.

On Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town, we will talk about the live eClasses Ashlee is starting in January (See the survey on her site now,) her eBooks about Thanksgiving and Holiday Goodies, and of course her appearance on Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship.

Ashlee’s favorite thing to do is to teach, and she is excited about her new classes she will be doing live, via video streaming. It will be like having her in your kitchen!

6. Inspiration can be Found at Breakfast…or Lunch

The Most Important Meals of the Day Start at Sangers & Joe:

A Globally Inspired Café Just Opened in Old Town Pasadena

Just in time for a warm and blustery Pasadena autumn, Old Town Pasadena welcomes a new neighbor to the beautiful brick-clad historic community. Introducing Sangers & Joe, a vibrant and inviting breakfast, lunch and brunch cafe boasting tasty intercontinental-inspired dishes and beverages opened Thursday, October 15th, 2015.

“Sanger,” Australian lingo for sandwiches and, “Joe,” meaning coffee, of course, combined to create a modern and airy market-style cafe featuring a myriad of tasty breakfast, lunch and brunch dishes, alongside coffee, tea, natural sodas and even a handful of beer and wine options. “The name itself reflects a casual eatery,” says Managing Partner Scott Kay. “We really wanted to create a community-based café that locals will love.”

“When it comes down to it, it is not just about opening a cafe,” says Kay. “The inspiration stems more from partnering and connecting with the community.” And that mantra is just what Sangers & Joe is all about: an approachable neighborhood café for breakfast, lunch and brunch (and dinner… stay tuned!) that offers something for everyone in a warm and welcoming environment.

Sangers & Joe is open every Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, every Saturday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm and every Sunday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. For more information, please visit www.sangersandjoe.com or call Sangers & Joe directly at 323.553.0563.

Show Notes

I asked Suzette about what she likes to do when she isn’t blogging.

We love to watch movies. After my children left home, and now empty-nesters, my husband and I rounded up our other empty-nesting friends and formed a Friday Night Film Group. Practically every Friday night, eight of us, four couples, meet at our local theater and watch the latest releases. We then have dinner together to talk about our film selection. We are sort of Open Table Film Critics!”

When I inquired about her favorite project, she told me about her new book…

“I am about to publish my first book, “101 Movies To See Before You Grow Up” I think it would be good to tell people about how this book came about, and most importantly how I came up with this list!

I gave 101 Movies to See Before You Grow Up a Five Star Review!

It is a great list and I love the way the book is put together. It is colorful and the illustrations depicting the iconic characters of each movie are delightful. The information is displayed in an easy to read and understand format, being that the book is for young people. However, I found it informative and entertaining to read. Suzette gives a very consistent and thorough listing of what I would call my all time favorite films. They are certainly the ones that I grew up seeing and hope to see again and again. ~Melissa Reyes

When I asked Suzette what she is most passionate about, she said, “Entertainment, how media affects children and our family values, travel, college, and my book, of course!”

I wondered where she and her friends like to hang out. “We usually head to the Grove and to Santa Monica. We love to walk around the promenade in Santa Monica, and try to eat at a small Italian restaurant on Montana called Locanda Portofino. It’s a tiny place that my boss/friend Sharon Waxman introduced me to.”

We will talk about these things and more on Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town!

It is always a thrill to meet someone who is well known for their accomplishments. I have the pleasure of introducing you to a new friend of mine who has had made an impact in many ways. She has enjoyed a very active career in voice over and acting for over 35 years and now she is a blogger, and a podcaster who reaches out to her “Baby Boomer” friends and shares her life experiences.

Rebecca-Forstadt-Voice-Actor-Los-AngelesI met Rebecca at the New Media Expo last year in Las Vegas and then got to know her a bit better at the Entertainment New Media Network’s conference in Hollywood this summer. She is very active in blogging groups online and at events and conferences all around the country. You will know her voice if you follow anime or cosplay. She is a dear and crazy fun to hang around with! I can’t wait for you to hear her stories!

I asked Rebecca about what she loves to do when she is not working.

“I love traveling especially in Europe. I also enjoy movie screenings, theater, concerts, wine tasting, foodie events, dogs and any sort of field trip,” she said.

She told me a little bit about her career.

“I’ve been a professional voice over actress for over 35 years for film, TV, commercials, animation, video games, audio books and anime. I’m a long standing member of SAG-AFTRA. I’ve also appeared on camera, starring in 2 motion pictures, as well as appearances on television and Los Angeles Theater.

I am best known as Minmei in the animated TV series Robotech which is celebrating its 30th year, this year.”Roboech anniv

Rebecca can be found all over the web for her various accomplishments and interest. Look her up – she goes by many names!

Her IMDB is under Rebecca Forstadt and her Podcast is called 2 BoomerBroads.

2-Boomer-Broads-Album-Art-340Rebecca has three websites. One for her current passion and interest, where she reaches out and helps her peers called, Baby Boomster – Food, wellness, lifestyle and travel for women over 50.   Rebecca’s podcast with friend and co-host, Dr. Sharone Rosen, is called 2 Boomer Broads – Life, love, laughs and unsolicited advice. And for the role she has played the longest, find her acting and voice over updates on Rebecca Forstadt – where she posts about her voice over acting and appearances.

I always ask my guests on the show where they like to hang out when they are in Tinsel Town, and Rebecca told me that you can often find her after a show at her favorite place to eat in Hollywood, Miceli’s (when it isn’t hot outside. LOL!)

That is a funny story because when I spent some time hanging out with Rebecca at the Entertainment New Media Network Conference this summer, we went to Miceli’s together with our friend from So Cal Lady Bloggers, Carolyn West. It was so hot…(how hot was it?)…it was so hot, we couldn’t stay – we had one drink and left to find a place to eat that had better a/c. (Okay, I think the plastic flowers were melting, that is how hot it was!) It was a real bummer, because I could tell Rebecca really wanted to stay. Miceli’s brings back a lot of memories of fun times for her and her friends.

Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town with Jeffrey A Barnes @DrDisneyland

Posted on September 27th, 2015 by & filed under #SPARKLE Tinsel Town Tonight Interviews, Affiliate Links, Books, See the Video on YouTube, TenMiniTT 2015

On this episode of Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town, I have the pleasure of introducing you to Mr. Jeffrey A. Barnes, the author of the new book, The Wisdom of Walt: Leadership Lessons From the Happiest Place on Earth. Jeffrey is a Disney historian and even teaches a college course on the History of Disneyland.

You may know, I love Disneyland and everything to do with Walt Disney. I was happily surprised to get to see Dr. Disneyland himself, Jeffrey A. Barnes, speak at the Entertainment New Media Conference this month in Hollywood, CA. He told his amazing story about how he overcame the odds and was able to write and publish his book. He is a talented story teller. He has a special way of bringing you along on his journey.

11870745_850356798379172_3841608876313040947_nJeff loves Disneyland, and he is also a huge baseball & football fan. He loves to travel, visit baseball stadiums, and play video games. Jeff and his wife have a wonderful family and would seem to have the classic fairy-tale life. But, like the Disney stories we all know and love, it didn’t come easily. When Jeff had the chance to start teaching his most beloved topic, the history of Disneyland which he had been preparing his whole life, he was given the news that he had a brain tumor and needed surgery within days. When he realized the recovery from the surgery, even if it was benign, would jeopardize the class from taking place, perhaps ever – you won’t believe what he did.

Find out about how it all came together and resulted in the publishing of his dream project, The Wisdom of Walt:  Leadership Lessons from The Happiest Place on Earth  in my interview with Jeffrey on  Blab.im and Meerkat.

Please join me and the author of The Wisdom of Walt, and find out how Disneyland can inspire and motivate each of us to live a great story and be the best possible version of ourselves.

Juggling with Author Genie Davis on Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town @GenieWrites @TenMiniTT

Posted on September 6th, 2015 by & filed under #SPARKLE Tinsel Town Tonight Interviews, Books, Everything Miz Meliz, Guest Post, See the Video on YouTube, TenMiniTT 2015

My friend and author, Pauline Baird Jones, referred me to Genie Davis when I asked if she knew any other authors who might like to be on the show. I am delighted that Genie agreed and I can’t wait to interview her!

Guest Post Title BarHello there, I’m a juggler. I think that fits me more than saying I’m a novelist, journalist, screenwriter, or blogger, at least right now. A lot of times I wish I could just sit down and work on one book project, or one screenplay – something I have done in the past, but that’s not the way life is going at the moment.

Right now, I’m working on a number of different projects, and keeping them all from crashing to the ground is pretty much what I do. Each has its own sphere of influence in my heart.

At the moment, I’m just getting a fairly major blog off the ground. It’s called DiversionsLA, and while a lot of the events I write about take place in or around Southern California, you don’t have to live in the City of Angels to enjoy it. The sub-title is “Art, Film, Food, Fun and Travel” and that pretty much sums it up. If you like contemporary art, independent film, cool restaurants, or you’re looking for some off-the-beaten path travel that you don’t have to sell your car to afford, then check us out. One of the things I love best about writing the blog is that I can write whatever I want to write, describe things I absolutely adore. So I’m very passionate about that, and about being to present artists and films and destinations that people might not have otherwise heard about. It’s very visual, too, most of the photos in each story are from Jack Burke, whose photography is really pretty amazing. If you don’t believe me, check out his awesome photos in the “Stars Over Moab” story about a glamping vacation.

Another big project right now is a really exciting Young Adult novel I’ve co-written with my writing partner on a number of projects, the very talented Linda Marr. The Cannibal Hunter” is a near-future coming of age story with a strong female protagonist, the first in a series that touches on love, family, government corruption, and yes, a cannibal virus. It’s entered in the Amazon Scout program, and if you click this link to help us nominate it for publication through that program, you can read a short excerpt, and if the book is published through Amazon Scout, you’ll get a free copy. Kind of a win/win.  If you like romantic suspense, we have two releases out now, “Between the Sheets” and “Animal Attraction.” Let us know you’ve purchased one or the other and we’ll send you a fun short as an extra.

Another awesome shared project awaits: I’m writing one of a two novella set with my wonderful friend and brilliant writer Pauline Baird Jones for Holiday release. Very excited indeed about this new collaboration! (Editor’s note, Pauline B. Jones has also appeared on Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town.)

IMG_2620I’ve also got several solo projects out there, including a mystery I’m really attached to, which has been nicely compared to Sue Grafton’s style. “Marathon”  is also the first in a series, but I’ll have a new stand alone, “Gun to the Head” out very soon.

And then of course there’s my marketing communications work and magazine writing. I write for both print and e-zines, on subjects from travel to toys, wine and beer, technology, and finance. You name it, I write it. In the mar/comm area I do corporate videos, write brochures, blogs, and social media.

Want to hear more about me juggling, tune in Tuesday! See the interview LIVE on Blab.
