This is not an advertisement. I have not been paid to post this information. I am affiliated with the Coca-Cola Company and will be attending some of the events as a volunteer and as a guest of the Coca-Cola Company. See my Disclosure for more details on why I write posts like this. It’s all good.

The Special Olympics World Games is coming to Los Angeles in a few short weeks. Imagine the excitement of the athletes and families who have been preparing for this! I have never been to a game or competition for Special Olympics. I am thrilled to have the opportunity this year. I will be attending the Opening Ceremony and many events over the two weeks the Special Olympics is in Los Angeles. I look forward to meeting some of the organizers of the events and most importantly, the athletes! I can’t wait to cheer them on and see their remarkable spirit!

Please watch the video below and share it with your friends. It is amazing how much love takes place when you take time to encourage someone…

Coca-Cola will donate $1 to Special Olympics for every share (up to $100k)

The show will be directed by Emmy Award Winner, Debbie Allen and produced by FiveCurrents with appearances by Jimmy Kimmel, Eva Longoria, Lauren Potter, Michael Phelps, Yao Ming, Greg Louganis, Stephanie McMahon and many more.

They are calling it the “world’s largest sports and humanitarian event this year.” The show at the opening ceremony may be one of the most inspirational events that LA has ever hosted. It is hard for me to wrap my head around these numbers. 7000 athletes. 3000 coaches. 170 countries represented. All will be there at the Opening Ceremony held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. That is the same venue that hosted both the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympic Games. Did you know that?

People from around the world will be there to cheer on the athletes and a global audience will be watching.

“Taking place in the heart of Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world, we are delighted to welcome these entertainment legends for a night to celebrate acceptance and inclusion for all,” said Patrick McClenahan, President and Chief Executive Officer of LA2015, the Games Organizing Committee. “Everyone in the Coliseum, as well as the millions of viewers tuning in around the world, will have the chance to cheer on and celebrate the true stars of the Games, the Special Olympics athletes.”

The creative production team who captured the world’s imagination with the Opening Ceremonies for both the London 2012 Olympic Games and Sochi 2014 Olympic Games – FiveCurrents – will be the executive producers of the World Games Opening Ceremony. The team is working with Emmy Award winner Debbie Allen, who is the Director for the Opening Ceremony. Specific details of the night’s event, which will include the Parade of Athletes and culmination of the Final Leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run® that will light the World Games cauldron, are being kept under tight security.

Special OlympicsThe Special Olympics World Games will go on from July 25th to August 2nd.

Laura

You could say Special Olympics is in Laura Cook’s blood, and now the 39-year-old’s dream will become reality when she competes in track and field at the 2015 World Games in Los Angeles. The El Monte resident has been part of Special Olympics for 27 years, but her parents, Karl and Penny, served as track and field coaches in the 1980s. With their help, Laura has accumulated 10 pounds worth of Special Olympics medals throughout her career. But, according to Penny, it’s what Laura has done with her medals that shows what she is truly about. “While medals are important to Laura, she plays for the love of the sport and takes the meaning of a medal to a different level by often giving her medals to friends and relatives who would be happy to have them,” Penny said. “Or if someone close to her passes away, she will place a medal on their coffin.” Her inclusion on the World Games roster itself is an accomplishment. “My dream has come true,” Laura said.
