Martha Brettshneider, How Does Your Garden Grow?

“In a world that’s constantly pushing us to move on to the next best thing, it’s challenging to fully appreciate the present. I am an author, blogger, award-winning photographer, and cancer survivor with a passion for inspiring mindful living.” ~Martha Brettschneider

Martha inspires us to push beyond the comfort zone

Martha Brettschneider is a writer, blogger, photographer, and gardener. In 2009, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which reoriented her perception of body, mind, and spirit. She transformed from being a fast-paced business woman to being a meditation-touting creative finally at peace with the world. She since has become a Fairfax, Virginia certified Master Gardener and an award-winning Project365 photographer.

Martha is a former international economist.  She is also a mom who understands the challenge of being fully present. I am looking forward to interviewing her on a special episode of Tinsel Town and find out about her and her new book.

Show Notes

In Blooming into Mindfulness: How the Universe Used a Garden, Cancer, and Carpools to Teach Me That Calm Is the New Happy, Martha shares her own personal transformation story.
“I wrote this book because I realized that my ego was holding my happiness hostage and I knew I wasn’t alone. Most of us don’t realize that we are the source of our own suffering and can turn that around!” ~Martha Brettschneider

Martha is most passionate about her garden. She says, “My garden was my first mindfulness mentor long before I had ever heard the term, so digging in the dirt always makes me happy. Garden photography is another passion that arose as part of my mindfulness practice, as it forces us to notice tiny details and beauty right in your own backyard. Though I was forced into it to reduce my risk of breast cancer recurrence, exercise has become an integral part of my life. My fitness girlfriends–both at boot camp and on the running trail–are my soul sisters.
We will discuss her approach to work, family, and purpose, and ways that her book, Blooming into Mindfulness, provides motivation for those looking to find and/or renew their own sense of mindfulness.
Some main points about mindfulness that we will touch on in the interview may include:
  • Taking control away from the ego – the transformational power of mindfulness and the freedom that comes with it
  • Her personal transformation – how she completely shifted her focus from the power economist to master gardener/mindfulness thought leader
  • Finding the balance between your inner thoughts and knowing when not to trust them
  • The vital importance of meditation as a form of physical fitness for the brain
  • The mastectomy experience, and the inferiority complex that can come with breast cancer
  • Gardening and the surprising therapeutic benefits of laboring in the soil and reaping visual delights
  • Creative outlets that arise from exploring mindfulness, such as her award-winning photography and the 365Project
  • The actual efficiency of mindfulness as a way of life – how procrastination can be a thing of the past
