The #MandalaGuidebook a Review and Interview of Author Kathryn Costa @100Mandalas by Melissa Reyes

Posted on May 21st, 2016 by & filed under ART, Books, Everything Miz Meliz, Intentional, Mindfulness Guidance and Coaching

May 21, 2016

I want to write a syrupy sweet message of love and admiration for Kathryn Costa, as I know you would enjoy reading that as much as I would enjoy writing it, however as a book reviewer and blogger I am going to go straight to the review of her amazing new book, The Mandala Guidebook.

The Mandala Guidebook: How to Draw, Paint, and Color Expressive Mandala Art, by Kathryn Costa

13246091_10206221941562579_1465888781_nThis book could have made a beautiful coffee table book, or an instructional text book, however the author intuitively designed it to be a companion book. It seems to have been intended to carry in your book bag with your sketch book, adult coloring books, and magazines. At least that was the impression I got when I first opened the envelope and got my hands on the much anticipated guidebook by the influential and inspiring artist, teacher, mentor and, now author, Kathryn Costa. In my book bag it has traveled since that day.

Not your typical “how to draw” book, this colorful display of fine original paintings, designs, and drawings is breathtakingly beautiful and pleasantly enjoyable to peruse, gaze upon, and admire; while doing so one may gain inspiration and motivation to develop their own artistic skills and talents.

Aesthetically pleasant to hold and read, with it’s high quality pages and mesmerizing high definition photographs, The Mandala Guidebook is full of detailed instructions and in-depth information on what an artist would need to know to navigate their own mandala discovery. Deeply personal and thoughtful, Kathryn passionately shares her insights and expertise in The Mandala Guidebook, gently coaching and offering suggestions on ways that you can express yourself while enjoying the process of facilitating any level of participation in this ancient art form.

Clever, fun, delightful, and intensive, The Mandala Guidebook is the best introduction and go to manual for artists and art lovers at any point in their personal experience. Tapping into her background in Graphic Design, and over 15 years working with mandalas, Kathryn Costa brilliantly incorporates graphic design elements and principles gifting the reader with a visual literacy. As she brings them into the conversation, talking about what they see and what they can do, Kathryn demonstrates many methods offering a wide range of styles, techniques and mediums for creating beautiful mandalas.

I had the privilege to interview Kathryn Costa about the launch of The Mandala Guidebook on an online show that I co-host with my friend, Cindy Harrison. Sparkle and Inspire is a weekly live stream demonstration and step by step DIY class where you can watch and participate as I learn and create a decorative art project. Being a mandala artist myself, I love how we incorporate mandalas into every project. Kathryn’s influence shines through in every area of my life that has been touched by mandalas.

In the interview, Kathryn shares how she first came to know about mandalas and how she used them when she taught high school students. She explains how mandalas can create a bonding opportunity and that the idea of creating a circular design can bring people together and create community.

Kathryn describes how she was influenced by Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist who discovered the significance of mandalas through his own inner work, when she decided to challenge herself and create 100 mandalas in 100 days. She explains how that experience was the starting point that has brought her to where she is now.

Tinsel Town Tonight with Martha Brettschneider @marthabrett @tenminitt Calm is the New Happy

Posted on March 18th, 2016 by & filed under Books, Everything Miz Meliz, Mindfulness Guidance and Coaching, Tinsel Town Live 2016

Martha Brettshneider, How Does Your Garden Grow?

“In a world that’s constantly pushing us to move on to the next best thing, it’s challenging to fully appreciate the present. I am an author, blogger, award-winning photographer, and cancer survivor with a passion for inspiring mindful living.” ~Martha Brettschneider
emerging from deep mud

Martha inspires us to push beyond the comfort zone

Martha Brettschneider is a writer, blogger, photographer, and gardener. In 2009, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which reoriented her perception of body, mind, and spirit. She transformed from being a fast-paced business woman to being a meditation-touting creative finally at peace with the world. She since has become a Fairfax, Virginia certified Master Gardener and an award-winning Project365 photographer.

Martha is a former international economist.  She is also a mom who understands the challenge of being fully present. I am looking forward to interviewing her on a special episode of Tinsel Town and find out about her and her new book.

Show Notes

In Blooming into Mindfulness: How the Universe Used a Garden, Cancer, and Carpools to Teach Me That Calm Is the New Happy, Martha shares her own personal transformation story.
“I wrote this book because I realized that my ego was holding my happiness hostage and I knew I wasn’t alone. Most of us don’t realize that we are the source of our own suffering and can turn that around!” ~Martha Brettschneider

Martha is most passionate about her garden. She says, “My garden was my first mindfulness mentor long before I had ever heard the term, so digging in the dirt always makes me happy. Garden photography is another passion that arose as part of my mindfulness practice, as it forces us to notice tiny details and beauty right in your own backyard. Though I was forced into it to reduce my risk of breast cancer recurrence, exercise has become an integral part of my life. My fitness girlfriends–both at boot camp and on the running trail–are my soul sisters.
We will discuss her approach to work, family, and purpose, and ways that her book, Blooming into Mindfulness, provides motivation for those looking to find and/or renew their own sense of mindfulness.
Some main points about mindfulness that we will touch on in the interview may include:
  • Taking control away from the ego – the transformational power of mindfulness and the freedom that comes with it
  • Her personal transformation – how she completely shifted her focus from the power economist to master gardener/mindfulness thought leader
  • Finding the balance between your inner thoughts and knowing when not to trust them
  • The vital importance of meditation as a form of physical fitness for the brain
  • The mastectomy experience, and the inferiority complex that can come with breast cancer
  • Gardening and the surprising therapeutic benefits of laboring in the soil and reaping visual delights
  • Creative outlets that arise from exploring mindfulness, such as her award-winning photography and the 365Project
  • The actual efficiency of mindfulness as a way of life – how procrastination can be a thing of the past

Thank you to Ana Lydia Monaco and Smith Publicity, Inc. for the opportunity to interview Ms. Brettschneider. I received a copy of Martha Brettschneider’s book for the purpose of review. I was not compensated for the interview, blog post, or review. See my Disclosure for details on why I do posts like this.

Meet A Genuine Original on Tinsel Town Tonight @WinKellyCharles @TenMiniTT #TTT

Posted on January 6th, 2016 by & filed under Books, Everything Miz Meliz, Quotes & Notes, See the Video on YouTube, Tinsel Town Live 2016

I enjoyed preparing to interview this lovely lady who is a profound influencer. She is a standout personality in the live streaming community. I am so pleased to have met her and I know that one day, I will meet her in person and we will be great friends. We still have so much to discover about one another, but I know we have a few things in common. Both podcasters and live streamers we also have the same guilty pleasures, sugar and chocolate. We both have published books, although hers are much more creative and inspiring. We have both struggled with the loss of loved ones.

The main difference between us is that am I free to move about and I have control of my muscles and my body does what I want it to for the most part. My new friend does not have this luxury, having been born with cerebral palsy. Yet, she manages to do some amazing things that I do not consider physically possible for me to do, like snowboard!

This list of positive statements sums up the kind of inspiration that I think about when I contemplate my friendship with Win Kelly Charles:

Be YOU.
A genuine original.
Find your voice and make a difference.
Don’t forget where you came from, but never lose sight of where you are going.
Believe in your gifts.
Cherish them and explore their possibilities.
Make mistakes and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Be brave and wild at heart.
Embrace all the things that make you unique.
Be passionate about the things that matter to you.
Practice kindness and compassion.
Be a hero to someone.
Demonstrate character and be a good friend.
Become someone that you will be proud of when you look back on your life.
And remember that all the quirky things about yourself, that sometimes you wish were different, are really the most special.
Because YOU are the real thing.
-Louise Carey

I would like to introduce you to Win Charles!

Win will be my first guest on Tinsel Town Tonight in 2016.

Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town with Jeffrey A Barnes @DrDisneyland

Posted on September 27th, 2015 by & filed under #SPARKLE Tinsel Town Tonight Interviews, Affiliate Links, Books, See the Video on YouTube, TenMiniTT 2015

On this episode of Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town, I have the pleasure of introducing you to Mr. Jeffrey A. Barnes, the author of the new book, The Wisdom of Walt: Leadership Lessons From the Happiest Place on Earth. Jeffrey is a Disney historian and even teaches a college course on the History of Disneyland.

You may know, I love Disneyland and everything to do with Walt Disney. I was happily surprised to get to see Dr. Disneyland himself, Jeffrey A. Barnes, speak at the Entertainment New Media Conference this month in Hollywood, CA. He told his amazing story about how he overcame the odds and was able to write and publish his book. He is a talented story teller. He has a special way of bringing you along on his journey.

11870745_850356798379172_3841608876313040947_nJeff loves Disneyland, and he is also a huge baseball & football fan. He loves to travel, visit baseball stadiums, and play video games. Jeff and his wife have a wonderful family and would seem to have the classic fairy-tale life. But, like the Disney stories we all know and love, it didn’t come easily. When Jeff had the chance to start teaching his most beloved topic, the history of Disneyland which he had been preparing his whole life, he was given the news that he had a brain tumor and needed surgery within days. When he realized the recovery from the surgery, even if it was benign, would jeopardize the class from taking place, perhaps ever – you won’t believe what he did.

Find out about how it all came together and resulted in the publishing of his dream project, The Wisdom of Walt:  Leadership Lessons from The Happiest Place on Earth  in my interview with Jeffrey on  Blab.im and Meerkat.

Please join me and the author of The Wisdom of Walt, and find out how Disneyland can inspire and motivate each of us to live a great story and be the best possible version of ourselves.

Juggling with Author Genie Davis on Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town @GenieWrites @TenMiniTT

Posted on September 6th, 2015 by & filed under #SPARKLE Tinsel Town Tonight Interviews, Books, Everything Miz Meliz, Guest Post, See the Video on YouTube, TenMiniTT 2015

My friend and author, Pauline Baird Jones, referred me to Genie Davis when I asked if she knew any other authors who might like to be on the show. I am delighted that Genie agreed and I can’t wait to interview her!

Guest Post Title BarHello there, I’m a juggler. I think that fits me more than saying I’m a novelist, journalist, screenwriter, or blogger, at least right now. A lot of times I wish I could just sit down and work on one book project, or one screenplay – something I have done in the past, but that’s not the way life is going at the moment.

Right now, I’m working on a number of different projects, and keeping them all from crashing to the ground is pretty much what I do. Each has its own sphere of influence in my heart.

At the moment, I’m just getting a fairly major blog off the ground. It’s called DiversionsLA, and while a lot of the events I write about take place in or around Southern California, you don’t have to live in the City of Angels to enjoy it. The sub-title is “Art, Film, Food, Fun and Travel” and that pretty much sums it up. If you like contemporary art, independent film, cool restaurants, or you’re looking for some off-the-beaten path travel that you don’t have to sell your car to afford, then check us out. One of the things I love best about writing the blog is that I can write whatever I want to write, describe things I absolutely adore. So I’m very passionate about that, and about being to present artists and films and destinations that people might not have otherwise heard about. It’s very visual, too, most of the photos in each story are from Jack Burke, whose photography is really pretty amazing. If you don’t believe me, check out his awesome photos in the “Stars Over Moab” story about a glamping vacation.

Another big project right now is a really exciting Young Adult novel I’ve co-written with my writing partner on a number of projects, the very talented Linda Marr. The Cannibal Hunter” is a near-future coming of age story with a strong female protagonist, the first in a series that touches on love, family, government corruption, and yes, a cannibal virus. It’s entered in the Amazon Scout program, and if you click this link to help us nominate it for publication through that program, you can read a short excerpt, and if the book is published through Amazon Scout, you’ll get a free copy. Kind of a win/win.  If you like romantic suspense, we have two releases out now, “Between the Sheets” and “Animal Attraction.” Let us know you’ve purchased one or the other and we’ll send you a fun short as an extra.

Another awesome shared project awaits: I’m writing one of a two novella set with my wonderful friend and brilliant writer Pauline Baird Jones for Holiday release. Very excited indeed about this new collaboration! (Editor’s note, Pauline B. Jones has also appeared on Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town.)

IMG_2620I’ve also got several solo projects out there, including a mystery I’m really attached to, which has been nicely compared to Sue Grafton’s style. “Marathon”  is also the first in a series, but I’ll have a new stand alone, “Gun to the Head” out very soon.

And then of course there’s my marketing communications work and magazine writing. I write for both print and e-zines, on subjects from travel to toys, wine and beer, technology, and finance. You name it, I write it. In the mar/comm area I do corporate videos, write brochures, blogs, and social media.

Want to hear more about me juggling, tune in Tuesday! See the interview LIVE on Blab.
