I want to write a syrupy sweet message of love and admiration for Kathryn Costa, as I know you would enjoy reading that as much as I would enjoy writing it, however as a book reviewer and blogger I am going to go straight to the review of her amazing new book, The Mandala Guidebook.

The Mandala Guidebook: How to Draw, Paint, and Color Expressive Mandala Art, by Kathryn Costa

13246091_10206221941562579_1465888781_nThis book could have made a beautiful coffee table book, or an instructional text book, however the author intuitively designed it to be a companion book. It seems to have been intended to carry in your book bag with your sketch book, adult coloring books, and magazines. At least that was the impression I got when I first opened the envelope and got my hands on the much anticipated guidebook by the influential and inspiring artist, teacher, mentor and, now author, Kathryn Costa. In my book bag it has traveled since that day.

Not your typical “how to draw” book, this colorful display of fine original paintings, designs, and drawings is breathtakingly beautiful and pleasantly enjoyable to peruse, gaze upon, and admire; while doing so one may gain inspiration and motivation to develop their own artistic skills and talents.

Aesthetically pleasant to hold and read, with it’s high quality pages and mesmerizing high definition photographs, The Mandala Guidebook is full of detailed instructions and in-depth information on what an artist would need to know to navigate their own mandala discovery. Deeply personal and thoughtful, Kathryn passionately shares her insights and expertise in The Mandala Guidebook, gently coaching and offering suggestions on ways that you can express yourself while enjoying the process of facilitating any level of participation in this ancient art form.

Clever, fun, delightful, and intensive, The Mandala Guidebook is the best introduction and go to manual for artists and art lovers at any point in their personal experience. Tapping into her background in Graphic Design, and over 15 years working with mandalas, Kathryn Costa brilliantly incorporates graphic design elements and principles gifting the reader with a visual literacy. As she brings them into the conversation, talking about what they see and what they can do, Kathryn demonstrates many methods offering a wide range of styles, techniques and mediums for creating beautiful mandalas.

I had the privilege to interview Kathryn Costa about the launch of The Mandala Guidebook on an online show that I co-host with my friend, Cindy Harrison. Sparkle and Inspire is a weekly live stream demonstration and step by step DIY class where you can watch and participate as I learn and create a decorative art project. Being a mandala artist myself, I love how we incorporate mandalas into every project. Kathryn’s influence shines through in every area of my life that has been touched by mandalas.

In the interview, Kathryn shares how she first came to know about mandalas and how she used them when she taught high school students. She explains how mandalas can create a bonding opportunity and that the idea of creating a circular design can bring people together and create community.

Kathryn describes how she was influenced by Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist who discovered the significance of mandalas through his own inner work, when she decided to challenge herself and create 100 mandalas in 100 days. She explains how that experience was the starting point that has brought her to where she is now.

Your Heart Knows How to #Sparkle by Melissa Reyes

Posted on April 5th, 2016 by & filed under Be Inspired, Everything Miz Meliz, I Love My LIfe, Intentional, Mindfulness Guidance and Coaching

For 2016, my one word intention is “Sparkle!”

What does it mean to sparkle? How does one strive to sparkle? For me, it is another way to show my happiness. I don’t aspire to just be joyful. I want to Rock Joyfulness Like a Super Star!

I want to be happy, connect with other people, build a community of trust and understanding, create tangible expressions of positivity to share, and make the world a happier place with some love making it shine for all to see. That’s all I want. It is not too much to desire. Those are the things that I love. This is what my heart tells me. I believe that my heart knows what it knows. My heart knows how to sparkle.

What makes you happy? Have you asked your heart? It could be little or big. Simple or complex. You could have a small flame of light shining brightly and steadfast which sustains you. Or, you may have a giant multifaceted diamond reflecting sunshine rainbows for all to see.

Your Heart Knows

I listen to my heart and make it a daily practice to choose to be awesome.

Gretchen Rubin is known for helping people find what makes them happy and she challenges them to pursue happiness as a habit. When I had a chance to ask her what makes her happiest, she told me how much she loves reading. Out of everything she could do or say at that moment to inspire the world – she answered with what she held in her heart. She likes to read. It makes her feel good. That is what she does to feel happy. It’s that simple. Do what your heart tells you. Your heart knows what you need.

I went back to work today after an eleven day spring break vacation. I worked from home during that time on social media, streaming video, and creating artwork. I enjoyed spending time at home and in my studio. I love that room! It makes me happy. I have made it my happy place. It is colorful, warm, and comfortable. Yet, after over a week away, I was happy to return to work.

I took time to notice the things that make me feel happy. Being greeted by Brother Skip as he sits outside the office saying hello to all the children as they arrive before school is a daily boost for me. He reminds me of how my Dad was, abruptly cheerful with a gruff voice booming positivism.

“Hello Sunshine!” I heard him belt out as I walked towards him. It warmed my heart. I literally felt his hug before he could get his arms around me. That was so nice!

I hung up a wind chime in the tree outside my office door. I love hearing it in the afternoon when the wind kicks up. It mixes in with the heightened sounds of the students playing on the field. I forgot how much I enjoy the students. When they came in my office today, they greeted me gleefully and politely asked me about my vacation. I thrive on their youthful energy and enthusiasm.

My boss asked me to work on some projects for her with a strong level of confidence. Being that the projects require a creative touch and her trust in my abilities, I received the kind of validation everyone hopes for in a job.

Today I am happy.

It is my practice, my joy, my mission.

I take a deep breath. I relax my eyelids and my shoulders. I close my eyes and I listen to my heart.

Tell me, if you please, what makes you happiest?

What is your heart saying?

Mandala Newz

This is new and exciting for me!

I asked around to find out what people wanted more of from MizMeliz.com and the answer was: mandalas!

2016-03-06 19.47.43I have been drawing and coloring Mandalas for a few months now and I just love it!

I share the progress as I draw and color them in on Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Everyone likes them. I have even had some special requests!

I enjoy making the mandalas so much that I wanted to order some products with the images printed on them – like a throw pillow and a phone case. I found RedBubble.com to be a great place for that. So I gave it a try. I posted some pictures of my drawings and ordered a few mugs, stickers and a scarf. I love them and I think you will too!

Tinsel Town Tonight Spotlight on #Focus @Tenminitt 3/29/16 6:00 pm PDT

Tinsel Town with Miz Meliz

The theme for this week is “FOCUS” and that means I need to get to work! I have lots of moving parts in my life’s work. I create art, I produce content for this blog, I enjoy connecting with people around the world via multiple social media platforms, I spend valuable time with my family and friends, and I have a full time job that I love. That’s a lot!

How can I focus on any of it or all of it? I am trying to come up with a way to tie it all together. I am making sense of my purpose for all that I do. I am considering what is most important to me and what I need to do to get closer to my heart’s true desires. My core values and goals are always top of mind. Mainly, above all is to be happy and love others. To do this well, I put aside differences, keep a cool head when facing challenges, and I try not to worry about most things. I am doing the best that I can. It actually feels pretty good.

So, how do I focus when I have so much happening in my life? This is the perfect time for me to do some streamlining and spring cleaning. I am on a staycation (at home vacation from work) and I have a list of things to accomplish. If I stick to the list and focus – – I will only get closer to my heart’s desire.

My Heart’s Desire is: To be happy, creating, connecting, and best of all, SPARKLING brightly!

Join me on Tinsel Town Tonight, my live talk show, to discuss why it is important to focus on your self and share your current projects with me. I look forward to hanging out with you and connecting!

Actively Practicing Patience as I Gaze into My Crystal Ball by Melissa Reyes

Posted on March 17th, 2016 by & filed under Everything Miz Meliz, Intentional, Life Coaching, Mindfulness Guidance and Coaching

Patience, patience.

I believe that patience can be the same thing as trust. Trust and faith seem to go hand in hand as well. What does it all mean?

It is about releasing control, isn’t it?

“Patience may not be flashy, but it is crucial to well-being and effectiveness.

And it’s not something only the Dalai Lama can do (i.e. notions of certain people having the “patience of a saint”). Patience is what modern psychological and brain science would support and it’s what you can do while you’re waiting for the next thing—the end of the meeting, your driveway at the conclusion of a long commute home from work, the salivation and smell of dinner served, the anticipation of a lofty goal’s attainment, and then sleep before dreams of a weekend’s diversions.” ~Mitch AbblettMindful.org

2015-12-21 13.41.44 (1)

Mitch Abblett calls it “what you can do while you are waiting for the next thing.” I don’t know about you, but no matter how much I try I am never successful at speeding up time or making things happen using my mental abilities. No, just thinking about things and hoping they will work out when I want them to and how I want them to, just never seems to happen for me. So, what can I do to get better at not spending my time worrying, wondering, waiting, and stressing out about “the next thing?”

How can I practice patience, actively? Trust. Faith. Hope. Patience. These are positive, yet  passive mental activities. Aren’t they?

Let me see. I will look in my crystal ball and tell you exactly what will happen next. Hold on a moment.

2016-02-27 13.46.33

Are you still waiting? This could take a while. And, I do not guarantee accuracy in my forecast.

My crystal ball says, come back tomorrow

Wow, that could be frustrating, huh?! I am not out of my mind, I don’t even have a crystal ball, nor would I know how to use one if I did. But, you see what I mean, right? That’s what passive patience entails. Waiting for the unknown to happen – for who knows how long – and not having any guarantee that it will happen at all. No wonder we always have to be reminded to be patient! No wonder it isn’t a built in process.

I just sighed. I am now taking a long slow deep breath. I relaxed my shoulders. I was getting worked up because it seems difficult when it should be easy. It is very easy. Here is what we can do. (Get that? Active. Action. Positive. Motion. Together.) Here is what WE CAN DO:

Instead of waiting patiently, BE PATIENT.

Instead of hoping for the best, BE HOPEFUL.

Instead of gazing into the future trusting that things will be okay in the end, BELIEVE GOOD THINGS ARE HAPPENING NOW.

Instead of always leaving it up to the Universe or God, with blind faith, BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.

You are resilient.

You are accepting.

You are a miracle.

You are Awesome.

Even when you are waiting.

Even when you don’t have the answers.

Even when you are afraid. alone. tired. weak.

Even when nothing makes sense.

Love this moment, right now.

Love who you are.

Love everything you ever were.

Love everything you have yet to do, see, and be.

Trust Me.

Believe Me.

Never Give Up.

Be Patient.
