July is National Blueberry Month

In the United States we have declared special days, weeks, and months to celebrate everything from our favorite foods and drinks to our favorite pastimes. (Thanks to 5W Public Relations for providing photos and samples of the products shown in this post. Please see my Disclosure for details on why I post articles like this on my blog. I was not compensated for this and it is not sponsored. All opinions are my own.)

Recently I enjoyed celebrating Social Media Day and National Rosé Day. These are both examples of special days that were started by companies to promote one type of brand or industry.

People love to come together for a cause, a mission, a common interest. We love to celebrate, commemorate, and honor that which is important to us. We do this best as a community. Someone somewhere decided that July is National Blueberry Month. Below you will find some products that feature blueberries as an ingredient. I like blueberries because they are good for me. Blueberries are known to have antioxidant qualities and are good for my liver. They taste great, too!

This week, the BubblrMedia community is going to be celebrating it’s first family road trip! It’s called Aliens on Safari and it features Emily Shatters, and her kids taking a trip from Georgia to Oregon and back. We invite you to join us as they share their adventures live on the BubblrMedia Facebook channel and on Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. What exactly do Aliens eat while they are on safari?  I don’t know for sure, but I will suggest they try the blueberries, they are delicious!

  • Welch’s Blueberry Fruit ‘n Yogurt Snacks are uniquely delicious, made with real fruit and surrounded by creamy yogurt for a “melt in your mouth” taste. Welch’s Fruit ‘n Yogurt Snacks are an excellent source of vitamin A, C and D, a good source of calcium and are low fat!

Why I Won’t Sell Out For Hearts Stars and Coins

Why I Won’t Sell Out For Heart’s Stars and Coins By Melissa Reyes, June 21, 2017

I don’t need or want instant gratification. That is an oxymoron. Gratification comes from putting in the work and feeling accomplished for making a difference. I feel cheap and worthless when I ask for a handout and I will not ask you to toss me a coin or give me a star to elevate my status and especially not to be my source of income. I will provide value for you and then it is up to you if you want to compensate or help promote me or thank me.

What are we doing when we make a game out of this? When our image is the commodity and we dance for change and gifts? Why would we pimp ourselves out to get attention, make some money, feel valued, supported, loved? What real value is that and at what cost?

When the big businesses make it blatantly difficult to attain star status by dangling a golden carrot just out of reach it is obvious they are in it to increase their own value. There is no intention to payout to anyone who will attempt to reach those goals however those who attempt to do so are the ones who will collectively pay the bill. They will boost viewership and engagement in their efforts to meet the criteria to apply to be a superstar. While the few people poised and ready in that position will be the only ones who will ever truly benefit. I’m willing to bet whoever decided on the cutoff amount for qualification knows someone in close proximity who most likely has been a sponsor at some point. Brilliant or rookie move, I’m not sure yet.

The people that will be hurt in the process are the ones who are out there really hustling to make livestream a useful and valuable resource and vehicle for their own success as well as the overall success of the community at large. They are out there, digging trenches, building bridges, cultivating the landscape, and creating the culture between communities of people, organizations, towns, cities, and countries – through their passion and love of people and for the people. The Brian Fanzo’s, Chris Strub’s and Carlos Gil’s of the world who speak from the heart, lead by example, and get things done are crushed by this giant step backwards in livestream paradise. The givers of our community who share and support freely and with such verve and integrity, are being shaken with this news that even they don’t have enough star power to get into the VIP room this time. You are better than that boys! Don’t sell out for stars. Super or extra shiny doesn’t make them any more real or better. They are still fake. Keep doing what you are doing and you will get the real rewards. I believe in you.

My vow for BubblrMedia:

We will make a difference. We will help people by bringing value and we will provide ways for people to express themselves, share their talents, showcase their skills, and become the super stars they deserve to be if that is what they desire. They will never have to ask their audience to give them props or throw a coin or show them love. We will simply ask to share with your friends if you enjoy what you see.

The only level up you can achieve is the one you set as your next goal. We will help you every step of the way. It might take time and energy and some investment. But real things worth developing and that are worthy of substantial growth usually do.

Remember why we are here. We are not here to make a buck. We are here because we are passionate about connecting with people and sharing a message of hope. For me it is inspiration. For Cindy is it artistic expression. For Chris it is helping others. For Brian it is growing a successful business. Whatever your message is, whatever your purpose is, remember the platform is the place you proclaim it. You bring the value. They can not take that from you. Ever.

Let your passion drive you and let your heart guide you! Reach for the stars in Heaven not the ones dangling in front of you like prizes covered in glitter. Your reward will be bigger than you can imagine and it will be well worth the effort and far more gratifying because of the hard work and dedication you put into it.

Temecula, Toyota, and Tranquility, Our Weekend Getaway

Let me tell you about my experience at the Temecula Valley Wine & Balloon Festival sponsored by Toyota Latino #LetsGoPlaces #VayamosJuntos…A huge thank you to Toyota Latino (check them out on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram ) for hosting me and Lito on this amazing weekend getaway and giving me the opportunity to review the Prius Four! Please see my disclosure for details on why I post articles like this on MizMeliz.com. It was my pleasure to share my experience with you, all opinions are entirely my own (with some input from Lito.)

I am excited about getting away for the weekend! Let’s go!

Temecula

It was time for a romantic weekend getaway! Lito and I have lived in Southern California all our lives. We have been married twenty-five years. Can you believe we have never been to the Temecula Valley? It is just a short three hour drive from our home in Los Angeles (depending on traffic) and we have heard about how amazing it is, but we had not been there. So, when we got a chance to get away for the weekend and check out the 34th Annual Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival, it sounded like a dream!

Driving out to the festival felt like getting away from it all!

The Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival is the perfect combination of many of my favorite things. Lito and I had a great time there! I felt like a kid when I walked through the gates! It was like a fairytale.

Taking the drive in the 2017 Toyota Prius Four was magical from the start. I had fun driving it. Lito took the pictures and we posted on Snapchat along the way. After a long day of doing errands around town, stopping at the dentist – which happened to be the only thing we couldn’t reschedule that day, grabbing lunch and making our way to Temecula, we finally were on the road to the festival. It was a long and windy road. (giggles) It was! Imagine it, a beautiful sunny and warm day, great music, a fun car to drive, my hunny by side and I am on my way to enjoy the best wine, listen to live bands (Bush, The Gin Blossoms) and see giant helium balloons light up the night!! It was a dream for me!

If you have a chance to go to the annual Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival, I highly recommend it. There is plenty to do there, even camping by Lake Skinner within walking distance. (Actual walking distance, the same as you would do from the parking lot – not hiking or having to take a shuttle, the campgrounds are right there.) I mention this because I wouldn’t have thought of a Balloon Festival/wine event as a family outing at first. However, there is plenty to do for the whole family. The festival part did not disappoint. The food and entertainment, craft fair booths, live music, and of course The BALLOONS would keep the kids happy and occupied while you taste wine and beer from the region to your heart’s content. Everything was clean, beautiful, well controlled, and very well organised.

The vineyards and estates that lined the road on the way to the festival were breathtaking!

There are two stages with bands playing almost non-stop over the three days of the festival. There are balloon ride packages available. There are wine tasting packages or you can have a single taste, all purchased separate from the admission ticket. There are plenty of options for meals. Make sure you have cash! Although most of the booths and vendors accept credit cards, the remote location has some limitations with internet connection. This made it difficult for the card readers to work, and the ATM machines also could not function in some spots.

Cheers!

I have to admit, I’m not that in to wine these days. In our younger days Lito and I did our fair share of wine tasting and enjoyed learning about wine. I can’t drink a lot of wine now because of dietary restrictions, or shall we say…lifestyle choices. I found it very easy to have a single taste while at the festival and there were volunteer stewards there to help me choose just the right thing. For my celebratory selection, I went with a peach champagne. It was c’est magnifique! If you are a wine aficionado, this would be a great place to try all the wines of the region in one location. Every winery in the area was represented. It was impressive. Check out the website for more details.

Toyota

I was so excited to have the opportunity to experience the Prius Four – with an EPA-estimated 54/50 MPG. With advanced materials, an innovative design, Prius promised to deliver the perfect drive. It turned out to deliver much more!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Even though I had driven the Prius all day on the way to the festival, it was on the way out of the parking lot that I really got acquainted with all the features this model has to offer. We sat in the car for over two hours as the thousands of automobiles were slowly ushered out of the multiple parking areas through that one windy road we came in on. We looked at it as a positive since we had a great vehicle that was equipped for this kind of thing, we were actually charging the battery as we sat listening to music, reading the manuals, and playing with all the buttons and dials! We didn’t have to worry about turning off the engine, wasting fuel, or putting out emissions. It was pretty cool.

Here are my Five Favorite Things About the Prius Four:

  1. It Feels Like a Car – I never drove a hybrid before this and it wasn’t at all what I thought. It felt like a car. It didn’t feel like an electric golf cart. It was sturdy, great to drive, it had power, I loved the steering and handling, and I felt safe in it. The doors are heavy, the base is solid. It did have that “whirrr” sound when accelerating like a ride at Disneyland, which was strange. I usually drive a Jeep Wrangler, so nothing about that sounds cute! I liked that this Prius did not need to be “plugged in” to charge. It was everything I would expect from a vehicle, with more ways to save energy.
  2. Light Leather Interior – Living in a part of the country that gets temperatures of 80-100 degrees most of the time, I appreciate a cool interior. I also love leather. The two together are usually a disaster on a hot day. Not so with the Prius Four – I imagine it was the color that made the difference. It was very stylish with white on black. The dashboard was very modern and state of the art – futuristic even! I liked the crisp angles and large lettering and numbers. The design was fresh, from the fabric, to the little touches of metallic edges infused into the design that gave it a retro feel.
  3. Blind Spot Assist – The design of the Prius Four creates a big blind spot and Toyota has a great feature that I was skeptical about at first. I like to look over my shoulder and see what is next to me and behind me. It didn’t take long to get used to the indicators on the side-view mirrors that let me know if there was something in my blind spot. That really helped.
  4. It’s Roomy – The Prius Four is a hatchback with lots of cargo space. It also has a lot of leg room and felt comfortable. It is a small, mid-sized car, yet I would enjoy having it as a commuter car that I could use for long trips as well as family outings.
  5. It’s Sporty and Cute! – Not just because the Prius Four that I reviewed was “Hypersonic Red” but the design is pretty cool. It’s sleek and sexy. The tail lights have a unique design. Lito called it my spaceship! We definitely enjoyed all the features the 2017 Toyota Prius offers!

Tranquility

Toyota thought of everything when they treated us to this little getaway. We stayed at the Pala Casino Spa and Resort.

After all the driving, balloons, and wine tasting, we were ready for some rest and relaxation! I’ve heard of some other Indian Reservation casinos in the Temecula Valley area before but I was not familiar with Pala. It was off the highway a bit, but that added to the adventure. It is a smallish hotel and casino and reminded me a little of “old Las Vegas.” Lito and I got some ice cream and walked around the gaming tables and slot machines after we got back from the wine and balloon festival. We thought about trying our luck. We ended up not playing because we really feel like winners already! We were very lucky to have this fun weekend together with all the activities, transportation, and lodging provided. We felt truly blessed. I didn’t want to risk losing any of that!

In the morning we walked around the beautifully landscaped grounds of the resort. We checked out the pool and cabanas. We took a little peak in the spa gift shop. I did a Facebook Live tour (see below) to share the experience. It was a very nice morning. I enjoyed my stay and would return to Pala anytime. The room was luxurious and spacious. Next time, I will try the spa services!

They have live bands perform in the center of the resort, as you can see them setting up in the video. This would be a great all inclusive destination for any occasion. It is especially nice because it is close to the Temecula Valley wine country and Oceanside, which is a beautiful seaside town in North San Diego County. We ended our trip with brunch in Oceanside and took some beautiful photos with the pier in the background. It was a great day!

Listening to ’80s music all the way home, played on Sirrus XM by Richard Blade, brought us back to our younger days for sure. The entire weekend in Temecula, with Toyota, gave us just the tranquility we needed to recharge our battery and enjoy the fun summer ahead!

Simple Gifts Bring Bright Smiles #5by20 @CocaColaCo

Posted on May 23rd, 2017 by & filed under A Year in Bloom, Everything Miz Meliz, I Love My LIfe

Simple Gifts are the Best!

I had a wonderful Mother’s Day this year. It was very simple, the way I like it. One of the things that I enjoyed getting as a gift was a simple single rose. I received it in the mail on Friday before Mother’s Day with a lovely note from a friend. This gift combined many of my favorite things and will stand out in my mind for a long time. Here’s why:

The Gift Was Handmade

The one-of-a-kind, handmade rose was created by an artisan using her own unique talent and gifts of creativity and resourcefulness to turn packaging (usually thrown away) into a beautiful keepsake.

Don’t you agree? The best gifts are the ones from the heart. The ones that were made just for you.

The Gift was My Favorite Color – Red

Roses are red. Coca-Cola packaging is red. Coincidence or not, my favorite color is red. What can I say, it’s the little things that make me happiest! This was a combination of the perfect things that made my day special!

The Gift was My Favorite Flower – a Rose

Since it is my “Year in Bloom” I am pretty into flowers of all kinds right now. I have received other gifts and photographs of beautiful flowers. But, the rose is by far my favorite.

The Gift was My Favorite Brand – The Coca-Cola Company

I have a special place in my heart for Coke. I have been a fan ever since the “Have a Coke and a Smile” campaign was popular when I was in the 5th grade and my best friend moved to Boulder City, Nevada. I gave her a bottle of Coke with a smiley face button tied to it with a ribbon. That was the ultimate gift a kid could give back then. That meant “We are friends for life! I won’t forget you!”

I have loved many things about the brand, it’s advertising, and the wonderful things the company represents, ever since. My absolute favorite is the way they care. The 5by20 program is one example of that caring spirit.

The Gift Represented Women Around the World

The card read…”Hello, by opening this gift, you’re opening a world of possibility for women across the world.”

I am in the midst of advocating for women in my “A Year in Bloom” program – by discovering ways to be healthier, happier, and better together. I have found that women all around the world are doing the same thing. Sharing positive stories of hope, perseverance, and love, is one way to ignite the passion needed to motivate everyone to achieve their dreams. What better way than this to celebrate the ultimate sacrifice a woman can make, motherhood.

The Gift Helps Women Around the World

From fruit farmers to distributors, retailers to recyclers, these incredible women who contribute to the making of this gift are part of the Coca-Cola Company’s 5by20 program, which aims to enable the economic empowerment of 5 million women entrepreneurs by 2020. Since 5by20’s launch in 2010, the program has reached more than 1.2 million women across 60 countries.

Learn more and begin shopping at 5by20.com

My kids took me out to a fancy dinner for Mother’s Day which was a treat – but I brought along my rose, which was my special gift!

The Gift was Meaningful to Me

The rose I received was a “Mitz” product. (Pretty close to “Miz Meliz” huh!) Mitz products are handmade by artisan women using up-cycled packaging materials. Mitz believes in being a non-profit organization that transforms the lives of women and children by creating jobs for the artisans and devoting all their income to children’s scholarships. Each Mitz item is unique and hand-made by women who invest between 8 and 30 weekly hours to knit it.

The Mitz Motto: Creat Jobs. Fund Scholarships. Reduce Waste.

By acquiring a Mitz product you are empowering an artisan woman. – Mitz/Weaving a future by Lina Holoschutz

“A good cause creates a great gift.”

I was not paid for this, and I was not asked to share this information. All opinions are completely my own. Please see my Disclosure for more details on why I share posts on my blog about brands that I love.

Embrace Yourself for Inspiring Adventures featuring @tarynbrumfitt on @BubblrMedia #IHaveEmbraced

Posted on May 21st, 2017 by & filed under Everything Miz Meliz, Inspiring Adventures, Interview

I just watched the documentary EMBRACE by Taryn Brumfitt, as I have been meaning to do for weeks as I prepare to interview Taryn on my show, Inspiring Adventures.

I knew it would be emotional since I have struggled with body image issues my whole life. #IHaveEmbraced ~ Melissa Reyes

I had no idea how deeply this would affect me.

Taryn discusses all kinds, every kind, of body image issue one can imagine in her film. The results are the same. We are beautiful. We are unique. It is up to us to change the way we judge each other and how we judge ourselves.

Please see the film.

Embrace is on Netflix now:

On May 30th at 6 pm Pacific Time, I have the great honor to meet Taryn and introduce her to you!

Here is the trailer – but I must say, this isn’t just a story of what happened to this one woman – it is about every woman.

Everyone needs to see this film.

The live interview will be held live on Facebook.com/BubblrMedia and in the private group, A Year in Bloom.

I hope to see you there and I welcome your questions and comments. Please post them either here, or on Facebook, and please know that I will do my very best to get to as many as possible during the interview.

Thank you!

I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, May 30th for Inspiring Adventures!
