Are You Dreaming About Adventure? #TheAdventureCompany @usfg

Posted on July 21st, 2014 by & filed under Discoveries, Everything Miz Meliz

Every day this week, I will post about an adventure I have been dreaming about.

Make your dreams come true!

Have you ever wanted to go WHITE WATER RAFTING?

I have heard that the rivers in Colorado are flowing big time this summer! According to The Adventure Company, as a result of the above average snowpack from this past winter and the cooler spring temperatures that prevented rapid early season snowmelt, river flows have been very sustainable this season. (Disclosure) That makes for some awesome white water rafting. And that makes for some amazing memories. My good friend, Yesmin, just went on a white water rafting adventure with her family. They had a blast! The pictures that she shared on Facebook were so out of this world, I asked if I could share them with you on my blog. Seeing how I will be able to give away a trip like the one she took, of course she was happy to oblige.

I went on an “incredible white water adventure. Follow the sequence of the pictures and see the Mother of the Year fail… Thank God for the best guide ever, Paul, who scooped Sophie out of the river! She wants to go back and try a harder river.”

I have never been on a trip like this. I don’t even have it on my bucket list. The only thing close to an experience like this that I have ever had was at Disney’s California Adventure. I was reluctant to go on it because I suffer from Vertigo and it looked like something that would make me dizzy. But, you know what? I had a great time! It was exhilarating and fun! Everyone on the boat got wet. I loved it actually. I am glad I tried it. If I am ever in a position to go white water rafting “for real” I will most likely do it. We only live once. I aim to live every day of my life.

Since 1987, The Adventure Company has been setting the standard for top quality white water rafting. In order to ensure that guests have a safe and fun trip, they only hire guides that have at least four years of commercial white water guiding experience. As the only company in Colorado with this strict guide experience policy, all guests will have an expert guide even on a beginner trip.

The Adventure Company guides are able to share their knowledge of the river, canyon geology, point out wildlife, and tell stories to their guests because their high level of experience and confidence means they are not just focusing on getting through the rapids. The guides know the river like the back of their hand and they give their guests an education and fun experience.

To ensure the safety of their guests, The Adventure Company takes extra measures by doing the following:

  • All guides have a minimum of four years of commercial white water rafting experience.
  • Colorado State regulations regarding river flow cutoff levels for commercially guided trips are strictly followed
  • An expert “safety kayaker” goes along on all trips to direct and assist any guest if they become a “swimmer” and are no longer a “rafter.” This helps ease the guest and ensures that their time in the water is greatly minimized.
  • A 2nd guide is added to the boat for the ultimate safety and security during high water if guests need extra assistance.
  • Boats have the ability to help each other very quickly because they leave the starting point in an organized periodic way.
  • Guides are trained for safety and rescue protocol and are required to be CPR/First Aid certified. Most of the guides also have advanced certifications and training in Wilderness Medicine.
  • Equipment and rental gear is always updated, maintained and operable.

Still smiling and loving every moment!

Still smiling and loving every moment! What a thrill!

So, with all the safety measures taken into account and Yesmin’s trust in God, her family had an adventure to remember. And little Sophie wants to go again!

We simply love life and have an adventurous spirit. As part of the US Family Guide promotion, I am able to offer you a coupon and a chance to win a trip.

My Chocolate Dream Came True – 10 Things You Should Know About See’s Candies

Posted on July 17th, 2014 by & filed under Discoveries, Events, Everything Miz Meliz

If I could ask the universe for something special and completely indulgent to experience, just for fun, I might even hesitate to ask for this.

It is just too much.

It was like a dream. It was truly a dream come true! (Disclosure)

I have wcaralked into chocolate shops and candy stores before wishing I could have whatever I wanted.  Here was my chance! I got to share the experience with my hubby. We were invited to the soft opening of the new See’s Candies store at the Promenade in Westlake. We jumped at the chance to go and try some of See’s famous chocolates.

The store was closed, in fact it was the day before the official opening day. We were with a small group of bloggers, media people, and VIP guests. Why were we there? To share this exciting news with you, of course!

If you are a chocolate lover like me, there is no doubt that you have this same dream. I will admit, it was a Diabetic’s nightmare – but chances like this do not come by often. Lito and I love See’s Candies and we had such a good time at the new store. We learned a lot about the company’s standards, it’s history, and the quality of it’s products. We sampled many pieces of chocolate and my sugar levels did spike, yet I have been very careful since that day.

Mostly, it was a fun date! We got to compete in a contest much like the episode from I love Lucy where we learned how to quickly hand pack a box of chocolates. We came home with some gifts that the boys enjoyed and plenty of sweets to indulge in later. And next  time I need to get a gift, I know just the perfect thing!

Here is the famous scene from I Love Lucy:

10 Things You Should Know About See’s Candies:

  1. You can get a FREE Lolly Pop on National Lolly Pop Day ~ July 20th. Let the Yum Begin!
  2. Yes, Mary See is real and that is her actual picture on every box and in every store.
  3. See’s  Candies has always been based in Los Angeles, CA.
  4. The black and white decor in every shop is reminiscent of Mary See’s own cottage kitchen.
  5. Freshness is maintained by adhering to strict sell by dates.
  6. The finest quality candies are made using the freshest wholesome ingredients: fine Guittard Chocolate, Challenge Grade AA creamery butter, pure heavy cream, C & H Pure Cane Sugar from Hawaii, California Grown nuts, fresh fruit and other fine ingredients. Only the best!
  7. The dark and milk chocolate used in See’s Candies is aged for months to develop it’s fine smooth flavor.
  8. The original recipes that Mary See made for her children in the early 1900’s are still available in stores today: Chocolate Walnut Fudge, Victoria Toffee, Hand-dipped Bon Bons, and Maple Walnut Creams.
  9. The unique shape of See’s lolly pops are crafted to look like the original style in which they were hand rolled, cut, and then sticks placed in the bottom of each lolly pop by hand. When automated machinery was made, See’s kept the square style.
  10. Everyone gets a free sample every time they visit a See’s Candies store. That’s about a gazillion free chocolates a year! (I don’t know the exact number, but with over 200 stores, you do the math!)

When My Son Became a Pirate I knew We Were In Trouble @PirateDinnerCA

Well, I knew we were in for some fun!

Do you want to have some fun with your family?

photo courtesy of MizMeliz.com and Pirate's Dinner AdventureGo to the Pirate’s Dinner Adventure and Show in Buena Park!

My family loved it!

Thanks to the folks at Pirates Dinner Adventures for hosting me and my family and allowing me to experience their show first hand as a  US Family Guide blogger.  And best of all, I get to share their exclusive $25 off offer with you! (Disclosure)

Special Offer: $25 off Adult and $15 off Child admission

“Set aboard an authentically replicated 18th-century Spanish galleon measuring 46 feet long, 18 feet wide with 40-foot masts, the ship is anchored in a 300,000-gallon indoor lagoon with night sky lighting. Surrounding the lagoon is a six-sided showroom of six additional ships where the audience is seated.

Voyagers on each of the six ships have their own fearless pirate mascot whom they cheer on as the adventure unfolds with a cast a dozen actors, singers and stunt performers engaging in a bounty of action-packed exploits, accompanied by cannon blasts, pyrotechnics and plenty of laughs.

In addition, more than 150 guests have the chance to play an actual role in each show as the evil Captain Sebastian the Black leads his crews of renegades on a swashbuckling adventure before your very eyes!”

When my son became a pirate, he was chosen by one of the cast members at the Pirate’s Dinner Adventure Show. By that time, many people, young and old, had been asked to join in the fun. He ran up with the rest of the swashbuckling young men and was eager to find out what his part would be.

What a fun adventure for all of us! The entertainment, music and songs, the food, the service – – everything about the experience was exciting, light-hearted and top notch. Anytime we have guests from out of town or for a special occasion, I plan to go there again and again.

Have you been to the Pirate’s Dinner Adventure and Show in Buena Park?

Let me know if you go there.

Especially if you are on the Red Crew!

Our Summer Adventure Begins with Earth to Echo #EarthtoEcho @EarthtoEcho

Posted on June 24th, 2014 by & filed under Discoveries, Everything Miz Meliz, Movie Reviews

This is our kid’s “ET.”

Earlier this month I told you how excited my son and I were to be invited to see a screening of the film, Earth to Echo. (See it here, Our Summer Adventure is About to Begin.) The event was an amazing experience for both of us! It’s not often that I get a chance to bond with my fourteen year old son, Roman. This was the perfect opportunity. It was like a dream come true. It was an adventure to remember. Much like the film we were about to see, Earth to Echo. Relativity Media hosted us with a check in at Sweet! Hollywood where we received an official Earth to Echo Chocolate Bar for each of us. Their hospitality was stupendous and added to the excitement of the much anticipated events of seeing the movie, attending a press junket, and interviewing the filmmakers and cast. (Disclosure.) We went to the screening at the TCL Chinese 6 Theaters at Hollywood and Highland, with our popcorn and chocolate in hand. This is the home of the World Famous Grauman’s Chinese Theater. I had been there recently for a red carpet premier and now I was there with my son. It was so much fun!ETE_Billing As I looked around the theater, I was happy to see so many children, mostly 5-10 years old, with their parents. Their hands full of candy and soda, I expected them to all be bouncing off the walls and then crashing from sugar highs by the time the movie started. I was sitting in front of a little girl who was a sweet as can be, but just the right size that I prepared myself to have the back of my chair kicked at least a few times. In front of us was a father with two little girls. They got up and moved around a lot while waiting for the movie to begin. Each time the dad sat down, he had to get up to help one of them or take them to the bathroom, to get popcorn, and then back to the counter again to get a left behind drink…I figured it would be that way through the entire movie. When the theater darkened and the the movie started, everyone clapped. The entire audience was hushed and focused on what we were about to see. No previews, no titles, the movie just began and for the next hour and a half we were all completely enthralled by the story, the characters, the action, the friendships, and most especially, the alien – Echo. All the kids stayed awake. I looked around and no one was bouncing off any of the walls. The back of my chair did not get kicked. The kids in front of us sat quietly, almost reverently. There was reaction from the audience, laughter, ahhs, ohhs, a few “oh my goshes,” and even some gasps. But not one kid cried or screamed or asked to go to the bathroom or even talked to each other. Why? Because it was that good.

Earth to Echo is a film about friendship, adjustment to change, facing fears, accepting responsibility, caring for others, making important decisions, and never giving up hope. There is a heartfelt and endearing message in this movie. It has been compared to and even promoted as being similar to E.T. the Extra Terrestrial. It is in many ways. All good. But, it stands on its own as an epic movie for the current generation. This is our kid’s “ET.” During the first 30 minutes or so of the movie, I was in parent mode. Honestly, I thought I would have some serious concerns about some of the risks these kids were taking and how they were handling things. It was completely from the teen-ager’s point of view. Sitting there with Roman, I was worried that if I said I liked it that he would think that meant I thought these actions were acceptable. Totally “mom thoughts” happening here. I began formulating questions in my mind to the producers and writers that I would be interviewing about this. What were they thinking? Then, something amazing happened. When Echo came into the story is when I think the transformation started. I began to see things through the characters eyes. And I mean that quite literally since much of the film is projected through hand held videography and cell phone footage (expertly crafted with camera work and CGI.) I really had the sense that I was on this journey with these kids. By the end of the film, I had been brought back to my childhood. I was cheering and crying for these kids, their families and completely excited about their discoveries.Earth To Echo You will never forget the feeling in your chest when you heard “Turn On Your Heartlight.” You know what it means when someone says, “ET, phone home.” That’s how you will feel about this movie. That is how it can be compared to the iconic films of the eighties. It’s not the same story, but it has the same heart.

” Turn on your heartlight
Let it shine wherever you go
Let it make a happy glow
For all the world to see
Turn on your heartlight
In the middle of a young boy’s dream
Don’t wake me up too soon
Gonna take a ride across the moon
You and me” ~Neil Diamond

ECHO The thing is, when we watch movies from the eighties that we loved as young people, our kids get the message and find them sweet, but not in the same way. They have become outdated and we can’t help but say things like, “That was before we had cell phones.” It is time that our kids have a movie like ET or Stand By Me, that they can relate to in the age of technology. In Earth to Echo, the kids Skype chat, text, use GPS, and more than I even understand of the latest techno-stuff available. It seemed almost futuristic to me. I realized that all the kids in the audience related to these things because they have always had them. Like TV and typewriters for us, Global Internet and cell phone connectivity are standard in their lives.

Earth to Echo is not about technology. Earth to Echo is about relationships. It is about sticking together, never giving up, and making things happen. The excitement and thrill of the adventure that brought us to loving this story is reminiscent of how films used to be made and now, we have a generation of writers and directors paying homage to this kind of film-making. These are the storytellers. (Perhaps, re-tellers, but that is how stories become legendary, right?) I am trying not to spoil the movie for you by telling you any details. Just trust me on this. Everything about Earth to Echo – especially the beloved character of Echo himself, is not to be missed. You will love this movie. You will want to take Echo home. I can’t wait to see it again and again.

In my next post I will tell you about our Jr. Interviewing and Round Table Interview with the cast of Earth to Echo, it’s Director, Producer and Writers. Our Summer Adventure with Earth to Echo Continues…including an exclusive video interview of the cast by my son, Roman!image002 (1)

Time for Goals Bingo! Summer Check-in 2014 #14in2014

Posted on June 23rd, 2014 by & filed under Discoveries, Everything Miz Meliz, I Love My LIfe

It’s time to check and see how I am doing on my goals for the year.

My focus this year has been… Discovery. I have been learning new things and breaking out of my comfort zone. I enjoyed sharing these discoveries with  you. So far I have written twenty blog posts this year about my discoveries. See if they interest you…

  • 2014 My Year of Discovery
  • #NMXVegas14
  • Building Your Blog Community with Dino Dogan
  • My Valentine Gift for You: Anyway
  • #ENMNCON14
  • Discovering Love, Romance and Jamzilla

  • Reflections on Happiness
  • Fall in Love with Acceptance
  • Say Hello to Human Kindness
  • A Summer Adventure is About to Begin
  • Are you a Peloton or a Traveler?

Some of my goals for 2014 are professional, having to do with my writing, blogging, life coaching and public speaking. I am still in the research and development stages of some major aspects of the business that I am building. I am about to start editing a new book. My plan is to edit through the summer and have something ready to publish in October 2014. As you can see on my goal chart (aka Goals Bingo) below – I have a lot of projects stewing. These are ongoing projects that are ready to be tasted and tested. So, I will be looking for feedback. Will you help me out? Just let me know if I post something you can relate to or like. That would be wonderful! Some of my goals I hope to achieve this year are very personal. I am starting a program with Sandi Amorim called the 100 Day Promise. It is time to invoke the “real me”! I am ready to dig even deeper and go for the gusto! I haven’t decided on my actual goal that I will make a promise to attain – – but it will have something to do with health and weight loss. You will most likely see some updates and blog posts about it in the next few months. Please keep me in your thoughts as I start this aspect of my journey. I am doing this for you, too. The more I learn about life coaching and reaching goals, the more I can help you realize your dreams and aspirations.

Most of my goals are things that I always need to be reminded to stay on track!  Thanks to my handy dandy Goals Bingo Chart and the Valentine RD’s #14in2014 Goals/Resolutions/Intentions

Quarterly Link-up, I have a chance to meet these goals and accomplish everything I set out to do this year. I know I put way too many things on my chart and it is really hard to focus on them all. Each column is a different category or area of my life I want to work on. My real goal is to stay on track and to be consistent. I expect to see more check marks in September!

There is still time for me to get B-I-N-G-O!

Here are some MAJOR GOALS I plan to accomplish in 2014:

  • Publish another book – coming October 2014!
  • Move to a new home – Did it!!! Listed our home in April, Sold it in May, Moved in June! Huge weight lifted. New life started. Now the fun begins!
  • Keep my blood sugar levels (A1C) within normal range – Help! I eat way too much sugar. I really need to focus on this!
  • Not gain weight – I have not gained weight. I have lost a few pounds since we have been packing, moving and unpacking. I am at a turning point and I think I might change this to include lose 20 pounds. But I have not committed to it yet.
  • Help my son apply to college (yeah, my 2nd son is at that stage!) – I registered my son in a “College Application Boot Camp” class and an SAT Prep course. That’s a start!
  • Dreams

Six months into 2014 and I am well on my way to achieving my major goals –

and many of my day to day goals.

I know I need to focus on making my dreams come true. I know what I want. I know what I need to do. It’s time to go out and make it happen!

If you believe it, you can do it.

I believe!

How about you?

Did you make a list of goals for 2014?

Have you achieved any of your goals?

Are you ready to focus on what needs to be done to achieve your dreams?

Are you a Peloton or a Traveler? This may be a dream come true for your next vacation!

Add an exceptional bike tour and a luxury travel experience and you get a TerraVelo Tour. Disclosure. Of course, this is not a trip for just anyone. I would love to go along by car, because the luxury camping under the stars in beautiful Utah appeals to me. The cycling, not so much. I don’t get the appeal of cycling for 20 or 30 miles at a time, or more. Yet, I can think of quite a few people I know who would love this opportunity. It sounds like a dream vacation for someone. Maybe you?

TerraVelo Tours offers fully-inclusive luxury travel for both avid (the “Peloton”) and casual (the “Travelers”) cyclists – offering an unforgettable journey for both skill sets. David Levine and Rebecca Martin, of TerraVelo Tours, are launching their year-round bike tours with two departures through Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, and Arches National Parks on September 14 and October 5.

I drove through Utah with my family on our college tour trip to Colorado a few years ago. It was breathtakingly beautiful! I couldn’t stop taking pictures. No matter how you go, make sure you take time to travel through this part of the United States at some point in your life. You will be glad you did.

Our guests are cared for by ten staff members, the highest ratio among bicycle tours.”

You will be delighted with the overnight amenities. Each of the luxury tents simulates an upscale hotel guestroom, outfitted with plush mattresses; fine linens; down comforters;  rugs; exquisite furnishings; spa bath towels; and toiletries and sundries.

TerraVelo cycling days range from 70-100 miles of pedaling each day for the “Peloton,” while the “Travelers” ride 20-35 miles, followed by alternative activities – horseback riding, sightseeing and transportation to that night’s relaxing stop, perhaps for a day with a book.

These exhilarating itineraries are $7,850/person double, including coach airfare from the Lower 48 states. Reservations are required. Guests who book by July 15, 2014, will receive a GoPro 4 camera package with SD card and bicycle mount, perfect for taking video while bicycling through the gorgeous terrain of Utah – and on future TerraVelo tours.

Can you make yourself happier by following a few simple steps?

Disclosure

I think you can!

I did it.

Years ago I was stuck in a fog. I was sad and depressed all the time. I realized that I was on a downward spiral of self-loathing. I had to put a stop to it.

20140301_092351

One of the things that I did that helped me feel better was listen to music. I loved listening to music and noticed how it affected my mood. Old songs made me feel nostalgic. Love songs made me melancholy. Sad songs depressed me. So naturally I wondered if happy songs would lift my mood. I made a CD of songs that I knew made me feel happy. I bought an alarm clock that had a CD player. I set it to wake me with a different song each morning. I smiled as I fell asleep knowing that I would wake to something uplifting. It worked. Now whenever I want, I can hum or sing one of those songs and I will feel better. It’s just like in the King & I – I whistle a happy tune and my troubles seem to fade away.Deborah Kerr

Of course it didn’t happen over night. But what I learned was that I could control my moods, especially when they were not for a particular reason. Naturally, there is a time for sadness. But when there is no reason to feel sad and I need a lift, I often turn to self-nurturing. Self-nurturing is important part of boosting your self-confidence and resilience.  Marquita Herald of IGG has a list of Self-Nurturing  Activities that you can make time to help yourself and foster resilience.

Recently I was asked to review an innovative new app for my phone that is similar to the concept of waking to upbeat music. The app is called Rise & Smile. I can just set the alarm on the app and instead of beeping or music, I hear messages of kindess from people around the world. I pick up the phone and I see a video that someone has recorded with positive messages. Some just say “Good Morning! Rise and smile.” I can record my own messages that will be seen by people who have the same app. Find out more at the Hello Human Kindness Project Website

I like the app because it is a positive way to encourage people and let people know that we all need to hear happy messages. I love it because it helps me to start the day with a smile and positive attitude. A little happiness can go a long way.

Spread the word. Rise and smile. Let your light shine.

What do you think? Would you share a video message on an app for others hear when they use the app?
