Fall is Here! Time to Check in on My Goals Bingo #14in2014

Posted on September 24th, 2014 by & filed under Discoveries, Everything Miz Meliz, I Love My LIfe

The third quarter of 2014 has ended. Fall is here!

It is time to check in on my goals.

2014-06-12 18.04.33This year I made a BINGO card for all the things that I hope to achieve. My goal is to get at least one bingo for the year.  Since I am participating in the Valentine RD’s #14in2014 Goals/Resolutions/Intentions Link-upI am committed to checking in every quarter to see how I am doing. So far, this has been a great way to stay on track with my goals.

I have been so busy that this quarter came up fast! No time to cram for the deadline and try and get bingo. So, this is the real deal.

Here is where I stand:

I came pretty close to getting a BINGO by doing some of the things in each of the categories. I know it would take an incredible amount of organization and focus to literally do all of the things I listed on my card in three months, even a year – consistently. But that was not the point. I tried to include as many things as possible that I wanted to accomplish and my hope was to be more consistent with many of the things I never get around to do. Checking in every three months is great because I can see which areas of my life that I have possibly been neglecting.

Over the past three months I have not paid much attention to reading or my life coaching practice. I will make those things a priority for the end of the year. It is a good time to shift my focus actually, because many people seek coaching around the holidays. I might be able to get a lot of that writing and reading done, see some clients and even publish a little book online before Christmas.

On the last quarter check in, I told you about the 100 Day Promise. I am in the final ten days of the program. It has been so rewarding and I have learned so much! The biggest take away is that I have determined my one true core desire, the thing that I most want for myself. It is my desire to honor my promise by putting into practice the things that bring me joy, energy and vitality. As long as I make that my focus, I know I am on the right track. Yes, it took three months to come to that conclusion – because it was about shedding all the things that I thought I wanted, should want, should be, should do. I got to the core of what really matters to me. Now I am free to be who I am meant to be. It feels so good!

100 Day Promise

You might be thinking, yeah – that’s easy to say. But, what does it mean?

It means that in the past three months:

  • I was in a group that I checked in with every single day to share what we were going through.
  • I completed a weekly module (aka homework!) where I read, asked questions, answered questions, created artwork, watched videos, listened to guided meditations and did a lot of soul searching and self reflection.
  • I participated in a monthly group discussion with people who called in from all over the world, all 50 of us on the same journey, lead by our coach, Sandi Amorim, and shared our stories and asked the major questions. I discovered that even though we all had varying goals and were at different stages of our lives, we all search for the same thing. Ultimately, we all want happiness, and the feeling of fulfillment.
  • During the course, I developed many good habits. Some may seem trivial, but they all are part of a bigger commitment.

2013-02-06 19.18.10

In case you are interested in the actions I am taking to honor my promise…

I now make my bed every day. I never realized how starting the day with doing this simple task would bring me so much joy. It wakes me up as I do it, so I feel a little more refreshed in the morning. I like that my room is neat when I leave it. I love to relax when I get home from work and having a nicely made bed makes a big difference. My children have noticed that I have been keeping my room tidy and that I make my bed. This is something I never did before. It seemed like a chore. I have noticed that the habit has helped me to feel free to do other things and I don’t feel guilty about having a messy room. (Bingo!)

I drink 3-4 glasses of water every day. I at the very least drink water in the morning before coffee, and at night before bed. I have been drinking water instead of soda at lunch time most days, too. I hope to keep up this practice even after the dry hot weather subsides. I feel refreshed and hydrated. It makes a big difference in how I feel and I think it has contributed to improving my health and energy levels. (Bingo!)

I am eating salads for lunch almost every day instead of getting fast food. This is a huge shift in my routine. I also try to eat nuts, fruit, and vegetables more.  Making these healthy choices contributes to my overall health and vitality. (Bingo!)

I have started a routine of going for walks every Monday with a neighbor. We walk about three miles and it takes an hour. It has been a wonderful way to increase my energy, get my blood pumping, burn some calories, and have some great conversations with a friend. No cell phones or Facebook allowed on our walks! I have lost a few pounds and I feel great! (Bingo!)

Best of all, I started a video podcast talk show! That’s right! It was part of my promise to do something that brings me joy, and this is something I have always wanted to do. It is fun and in line with all of my core values for my blog, my writing, and coaching. It supports my quest to continue learning and growing. I get to interact with other people that I interview. I have an easy and fun format that allows me to be at my very best while I am having loads of fun. This project has been quite fulfilling. You know something is really good when everything falls into place easily. One day a few months ago, Alecia Lawrence was interviewing me for her daily podcast. I told her that I always wanted to do a weekly show. She challenged me when she asked what’s stopping me. There was no reason not to start. I am so glad I did! I have recorded seven episodes so far. When I have ten, they are going up on iTunes and I will be official! For now, you can find them on You Tube and here on If you want to be a guest on my show, Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town, contact me at (B-I-N-G-O!)

Technicolor small

Besides the BINGO card, I also listed some major goals that I hoped to accomplish in 2014:

  • Publish another book – I have a big announcement on this! Hopefully at the end of the year I can tell you all about it! (Bingo!)
  • Move to a new home – we did this in June, and couldn’t be happier. It is a big weight lifted from our shoulders. My husband, kids and I are settled in our new digs. (Bingo!)
  • Keep my blood sugar levels (A1C) within normal range – Over the summer months I had a big problem with this. Around my birthday I could not control my willpower, I let my guard down and got seriously off track. I had birthday cake and desserts, and on top of it, I was eating a lot of summer fruits. The watermelon really did me in! I experienced the worst pain ever. I have had small bouts with Diabetic nerve pain in the past, so I know when I feel those sparks and shooting pain in my legs and tingling in my feet that I need to take it easy. But this was pure Hell! It really almost wiped me out. One more day and I was going to go to the ER. I did everything I could think of to reduce the aches and pain and alleviate the tingling sensation from my nerves. Finally, it took it’s course and I have been diligent to not over do it with the sugar since. I hope that never happens again! (Noooo bingo.)
  • Not gain weight – good news! Since I started the 100 Day Promise, I lost 5 1/2 pounds! The key was to not weigh myself for six weeks. It was nice to see a difference on the scale when I did. This proves that all the little changes I have made are working. Making healthy choices and maintaining good habits will contribute to my overall well being, health and energy! (Bingo!)
  • Help my son apply to college (yeah, my 2nd son is at that stage!) – This is a huge thing for me. I want to help him and give him some independence and accountability at the same time. It was stressing him out, so we have an appointment with the college counselor. Our son’s grades are up and he is doing very well in school. He has decided on a major, that is a big step in the right direction. My hope is to make this experience stress free and even exciting for him. The world is wide open and even though he can’t do ANYTHING he wants, there are countless opportunities for him. By December, we should know more. (Very close…. almost bingo.)

I am happy, very happy, with all my accomplishments so far this year. I have discovered many new things and I have learned something about myself.

MEET MARIBEL of @TenMiniTT Episode 5 @TheMaribelReyes

Posted on September 7th, 2014 by & filed under #SPARKLE Tinsel Town Tonight Interviews, Discoveries, Everything Miz Meliz

Today on Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town, I am happy to have Maribel Reyes, of as my special guest!

Maribel headshot I know Maribel from our So Cal Lady Bloggers group. I met her online a few years ago and we bonded because we have the same last name. We call each other “sistah” but we are completely unrelated. In fact, we have very little in common other than we are both married to men who have the same last name, we are both lifestyle bloggers, and we both have been inspired and our lives have been enriched by our relationship with our mothers. That part about our mothers helping us through difficult times in our lives, I just found out in my interview with Maribel on my show, Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town. I learned some other cool things about her, too! I was surprised to learn that Maribel worked in the export/trade business and that she had the same job as her husband. He is an expert in the Harmonized Tariff Code which is used for the classification of goods exported around the world. (8:50) I asked Maribel to tell me about her move to Central America, and how she and her family have adjusted over the past 14 months. Maribel, her husband, and their two small children live in San Jose, Costa Rica in the Central Valley. Google Map Maribel told me what it is like being an expat and meeting other expats from many different countries who are all working in Costa Rica (1o:30) I wanted to know about the things that are most important to Maribel and what she writes about on her blog, StrollerAdventures.

Maribel is most passionate about making the world a better place for her kids.

Maribel told me about how her mom influenced her and set an example for adjusting to life far away from home. She had an epiphany that she shared with Maribel when she saw the movie, Doc Hollywood, where she realized that it isn’t the place (that makes things good or bad,) it’s the person. We have to do what we can to make our home a happy place to live.

I am most passionate about accepting differences with others and learning to respect those differences. We are so caught up in our own little worlds that we tend to forget that we are not alone in the world and share our living space with other human beings this is key if we want to make this a better place for our kids to grow and live in. We should lead by example and embrace differences. It doesn’t mean we have to agree, but just to accept that we don’t all have to be the same. “To make the world a better place, we all have to accept that there are differences and learn to appreciate those differences.” ~Maribel Reyes

I asked Maribel about what she does for fun in Costa Rica. I found out that Maribel loves adventure!

Zip-lining in the Jungles of Costa Rica

Maribel going zip liningI have never thought that zip lining through jungle is something that I would want to do! No way, not me! But listening to Maribel describe her adventure and how much she and her children enjoyed it, I think I might have to add that to my bucket list.

What is Maribel’s Favorite Hollywood Hot Spot?

Sunday Brunch at Junior’s Deli

juniors_bakery_exterior_a_l Sadly, the Hollywood hot spot that Maribel so fondly remembers is closed. It was Junior’s Deli in Westwood, CA. They lost their lease and closed their doors in December 2013. Maribel shared a fun story of meeting Julio Iglesias and his band there once when she was a girl. Maribel’s family followed him when they left the restaurant, all the way to his hotel in Marina del Rey! Iglesias Fanatics! Find out more about Maribel in my interview with her on Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town. She tells me all about trying out Costa Rican recipes and her favorite restaurants.

Tinsel Town Tales with Mary Lansing #TenMiniTT @MaryFarquhar

Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town

Miz Meliz

and Special Guest,

Mary Lansing of Along Comes Mary Blog

Mary2 I’ve spent a lot of time getting to know Mary over the past few years since we first met through So Cal Lady Bloggers. She is delightful and I am glad that she is my friend. We have been on quite a few adventures together. In this episode of Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town, I asked Mary what she likes about living in Los Angeles, what she likes to blog about, and how she has changed since she started blogging. The video and audio get kinda funky towards the end, so check out how I diced and spliced it and made it work! It turned out to be about 15 minutes of Fun in Tinsel Town! Enjoy!

What does Mary like to do for fun?

I love to travel & see other areas, nothing gets me more excited than a road trip, but I really love to explore LA; while so many Angelinos are anxious for a trip out of town, they forget so much diversity can be seen & fun can be had right here.

I also love concerts & theatre!

Tori Amos Quote

What is Mary Passionate About?

Being a blogger, I am discovering my passions are developing faster than I can handle it. Most recently, I am loving the opportunities for travel & writing about destinations.  I love travel, entertainment, and blogging; its enriched my life so much with friends, fun opportunities and getting me out of my comfort zone, that if we had even one listener decide to start a blog after listening to my segment, I would be thrilled!

Mary’s Favorite Hollywood Hot Spot:

The Hollywood Bowl. There’s so much history at that arena & unlike a lot of Hollywood venues that I do love, like The Sunset Strip, this is the perfect place to introduce a child to the awesome-ness that’s Hollywood, plus they get to see live music & maybe even history happen, right before their eyes.

Nearby Hollywood, I also love Los Feliz. Griffith Park, diners & the adorable hidden gem, “The Shakespeare Bridge” are all right there.

Mary really knows L.A. and Hollywood! She suggests lots of fun places I can’t wait to check out. Listen to the podcast and let me know if you have been to any of them.

Trista has lived in California for a few years and hasn’t had a chance to spend too much time in Hollywood. I was thrilled when she mentioned this classic eatery as her favorite L.A. Hot Spot!

“I don’t eat meat anymore but the best place I went to in L.A. was Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles, It was the best chicken I ever had, after mine of course. ”   roscoes

I really enjoyed meeting Trista Laborn!

She is a Total Rock Star! I can’t wait to try out some of those massage candles. Trista asked me a question at the end of the interview, she wanted to know where I like to hang out and if I would suggest somewhere she and her husband might go some day. Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town Episode 1 @LAStory with Stevie Wilson @TenMiniTT

Posted on August 2nd, 2014 by & filed under #SPARKLE Tinsel Town Tonight Interviews, Discoveries, Everything Miz Meliz

Welcome to

My special guest today is

Stevie Wilson

Stevie at the Grammy Suites

Stevie at the Grammy Suites

This was my very first time as press on the red carpet! I loved seeing my blog name on the "line up"!

Welcome to Tinsel Town!

I first met Stevie through the So Cal Lady Blogger Group on Facebook. We connected online on many discussions and soon found we had some things in common. We both love food, fashion, and fun! I have always admired Stevie for her experience in social media and for her willingness to help me out when I was a newbie. She shares great advice on writing and blogging. Stevie gave me a chance to guest post on her blog, LA-Story. When I wanted to write up a review on Chelsea Handler’s show in Atlanta but didn’t feel it was a good fit for MizMeliz, she shared her space on the internet with me. Stevie is professional, funny, smart, and her warm smile brightens my day every time we interact online.

When I asked what my blogging friends what they thought of podcasts and v-logging, Stevie was the first to respond. She is always very supportive and I trust her insights. If Stevie gave a green light on the project, I knew it was the way to go. She knows her stuff! Entrepreneurial, innovative, experienced, and possibly the most down to earth genuine lady I have met online, I am so happy to have as my very first guest on Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town, the legendary, influential, inspirational, and intriguing….Stevie Wilson!

What Stevie “does”:

stevienwhaircutI am one of the early pioneers in social media and digital marketing. I created an event for a beauty website which became the first ever web + brick & mortar store event. I wound up doing dozens of events for different stores (Barneys, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue & boutiques.)

I had a website where I was implementing all these things…lots of interviews, phone interviews, videos with beauty & fashion industry notables. I am big in social media. I like the sharing with people. I am good at creating connections with people. I am big in the fashion/beauty/lifestyle sector, too.

What Stevie likes to do for fun:

Stevie with Jeanne Mai and Jaren Van Doorn

I love to hang out with my friends. I had an opportunity to treat my friends to a great catered dinner (courtesy of Bulgarini Gelato) and I was asked to invite some friends. So I got 10+ of my best friends to all agree on a single evening to come hang out at my house. So much fun. (My kid was texting & complaining about the noise!) We had a great time…I was sorry to see it end. I love to have parties, too. I have an amazing array of friends who really find they have a lot in common!

Otherwise I like to see friends for tea or a meal, hang out, go to hit a movie or head to events that I am always invited to.

Stevie loves to dish about:

1902882_505615842894725_9073793026325043644_n (1)Fitness & health, I am currently working on this series. Ditto cocktails and food. Seems weird, huh?  Truly, there is a way to be healthy and still eat and have a cocktail.

Plus, I know how to bargain shop. I have a great rep for that too…I bought over $300 of clothing for $80. I love sample sales (my dress for the Emmys cost $70.) If my friends want to save money and still get great style, I am the person they call.

Stevie’s Favorite Hollywood Hot Spot:

The Sunset Tower

I love going to the Sunset Tower. I went there for drinks once when we were hitting an event at the Argyle (*Oribe was there to launch his line and the Argyle helped sponsor the launch party after the training.) While he finished the staff presentation, we snagged a cocktail at the bar…so great! They made a special cocktail just for my personal tastes!

The Sunset Tower Hotel

I love the Hotel Cafe, too. I have a lot of musicians I know who play there. [Find out more about Stevie’s experiences at the Hotel Cafe on the video/podcast interview, Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town, below.]

The most interesting thing that I learned about Stevie:

She is the “face” of  McAfee’s Fake Anti-Virus Scareware campaign. After having her computer attacked by malware, she was interviewed in her home by McAfee for this video:

Thank you Stevie!

It’s been great getting to know you!

What do you think of my first video podcast episode of my talk show?

What is it Like to be on The Alecia Lawrence Show? @AleciaLawrence #podcast

Posted on July 29th, 2014 by & filed under #SPARKLE Tinsel Town Tonight Interviews, Discoveries, Everything Miz Meliz

Soon, I hope to will interview the person who will always be my podcast angel, she does this daily, Alecia Lawrence.

A daily podcast! Every single day! What a Rock Star!

Alecia Lawrence and I are two very different people. We have different backgrounds, we have lived unique experiences on our journey, and we each live a totally varied lifestyle. Yet, we have a similar calling in life. And what we have in common is that we are both answering that call.

I call it making connections. Being supportive. Friends helping friends.

She calls it a “strategic alliance.”

I call it an interview.

She calls it a conversation.

I may say “I hope this works.”

She would say, why hope? “Make it happen.”

Read Alecia Lawrence’s About Page on her website, I Live to Inspire at

I got an email out of the blue one day, I completely believe that email is how angels communicate with me…

It was from Alecia Lawrence.

I felt like I knew her all my life when I read this:

My customers struggles daily with low self

esteem emotions and feelings of unworthiness

They desperately want to win the inner battle

to create the life they desire.

This strategic alliance will help you

while providing a solution to [those]

who are fighting an inner battle with self

esteem and feelings of inferiority, anger,

guilt and sadness.

Thanks for your time. I urge you to reply

today if you are interested in speaking more

with me and joining our network.

Um, yes, I want to know more. Did I reply? Did I reach out? Did I join. No.

I waited. I hesitated. I put a star on the email and pinned it for “later.”

(Read between the lines; self-sabotage, resistance, inner voices doing their dirty work.)

One day, I was clearing my email and I replied. I said something like, “I would like to connect with you. Are you interested in talking with me?” I am sure I told Alecia a little bit more about myself in that email. I most likely included some links. Always marketing myself….

Alecia replied:

Hi Melissa,

Congrats on self publishing your first book. I can only
imagine what a successful achievement it has been.
I love your motto of live be do.
I am always on the look out for great info to teach
and share with my audience so they too can live
their best life.
I would love to have you as a guest on my
podcast The Alecia Lawrence Show to showcase
you and your message.
It would be a 20 min or less conversation to share
your technique and help people shift their life.
Looking forward to your response.
Love Peace and Bliss.

I can’t wait to hear from you

Yours In Happiness,

Alecia Lawrence

Worldwide Coordinator, ILTI Group

P.S. How does it get any better than this?

Wait, what? A podcast interview? Heck yeah! Let’s do this.

Everything happens for a reason.

One afternoon, Alecia called me. We had a great phone conversation. Getting to know each other a bit was vital to doing this right. I loved talking to Alecia. She is quite inspiring!
We set a date and time. A few days before the scheduled interview, Alecia sent me some questions based on our conversation.
Tell us a little about yourself and your mission?
What is one of the biggest challenges you have faced?
How did you overcome said challenge and what major lesson did you learn?
What is the 100 day promise program?
What attracted you to the program which made you say I want to do this?
Why 100 days?

What is a life coach and why did you become one?

Why would I need one?
What’s the secret sauce behind your coaching program?
Why did you write  the Sound of My Soul?
Who is this book for?
Why do I need to read this book?

I wrote down these notes to “answer” these questions in preparation for my big interview. Of course, as resistance would have it, I could not locate them when I needed them and I was totally unprepared and couldn’t do the interview on our scheduled date and time. I didn’t have the right phone connection either. This was a bomb. Nothing was going right. Yet, Alecia was patient and understanding. She has been doing this awhile. She is a woman of her word. She waited for me to come around and make it right. I didn’t need my notes when the time came. I was at ease and energized. I answered her questions from the heart.

I am delighted with the interview. Mostly, I am enthusiastic about the inspiration and motivation that Alecia gave me in our conversations leading up to and since the interview. She challenged me to stand up for myself and do what I have been wanting to do for a long time. I will speak in positive terms. She called me out on my “iffy” vocabulary. I have been hesitant for awhile and put my aspirations on the back burner. Why wait? Life is too short. I have been playing around with ideas for video webinars and podcasts for years. After the experience with Alecia, I feel that I must act on it now. With the release of the live interview on Alecia’s show today, I want to announce my own show. The launch of my own talk show with the first episode airing on this Saturday, August 2nd. It will be a weekly interview with amazing people. Each week I will interview someone who inspires and intrigues me. Since I love Hollywood and I want to honor the rock stars and legends in my life, I decided to make this fun…

My Mid-Summer Dream at StoneFire Grill

It’s summertime and what is better on a warm summer evening than sitting outside on the patio drinking cool drinks, eating amazing fresh food and hanging out with friends? (Disclosure.)

That is exactly what I did last week with my So Cal Lady Blogger friends at the StoneFire Grill in West Hills.

The wonderful people at StoneFire Grill invited us over for dinner to sample their newest menu items. They are so hospitable and friendly, it was like being asked over to a friend’s home for a meal.  We had a whole section of the patio to ourselves. It was so nice, I wanted to stay longer.

My family enjoys eating at StoneFire all the time. We love to order barbecue and breadsticks and all the yummy sides and salads for parties. The cheesecake is to die for! Like most people I know, we try to eat healthy but we love the ease and convenience of ordering from our favorite restaurant. Since we always order our favorites, I had not looked at the menu or tried any of the new items since they were introduced. This was the perfect opportunity.

Maddie and Colin at StoneFire West Hills

It was a special treat to meet the people behind the new menu at StoneFire. Justin Lopez was there serving us dinner and his brother, Kyle was actually doing the cooking. Everything was amazing!

Now I have some new, very healthy, favorites. The best part is they are very very yummy and just as worthy of craving as the rich meaty dishes I have grown accustomed to. I seriously have not stopped thinking of the Keen Green Salad and Grilled Shrimp. As much as I love the ribs and chicken at StoneFire, it will be easy to eat light this summer! 2014-07-22 03.47.13

So, it kinda makes you wonder why and how they did it, huh? I mean, why improve a good thing, right? Everyone loves the great food at StoneFire. Why the new items? Are they going to change? I hate when new things replace the old stuff that everyone loves. New management or owners or franchisees usually make changes like that. What’s the scoop?

Well, it helps if you know the background. The way things started over at StoneFire, I would be surprised if there were big changes in the plans. I received this story from my friends who coordinated the media event:

What happens when a strict vegetarian takes his place in his family’s popular “meat & potatoes” restaurants? That was the very real dilemma recently facing Justin Lopez, whose mother, Mary Harrigan and aunt Maureen, founded Stonefire Grill in 2000.  After all, the popular restaurants, with 7 locations in LA and OC, are known for large-portions of tri tip, ribs, pizzas, mac n cheese, carrot cake, etc.

To make his mark, Lopez did something risky – something that could have turned off the restaurant’s core customers and forever damaged its image.  He began reshaping the menu with a sharp focus on vegetarian dishes.  The result?  Sales of the new items quickly outpaced many of the favorite items that had been on the menu for years and the restaurants now are attracting a broader market share including many vegetarians and vegans.

He introduced items with key ingredients like kale, quinoa, chickpeas and arugula taking center stage.  Some customers had never even heard of some of these ingredients, however, they proved more than popular.  For instance, the Golden State Kale with chopped kale, red cabbage, cucumbers, golden raisins, roasted chickpeas and avocado with lemon tahini dressing has emerged as one of the top selling items on the entire menu.

The Golden State Kale Salad: pretty, elegant, healthy and tasty!

Lopez also introduced a simple concept that has caught on – allowing guests to take any of the 16 salads featured on the menu and having it served as a wrap.

What are his latest offerings? Since cauliflower is the “new kale” this season, Lopez has developed several dishes featuring this cruciferous veggie like the Roasted Cauliflower Pita stuffed with chopped tomatoes, green onion, lemon tahini and a spicy cilantro-Serrano pepper sauce.

I never thought I would like cauliflower this much! The flavor from the roasted cauliflower is rich and savory.

Not all of the new items are vegetarian.  He has also crusaded for more lean protein items like turkey and shrimp that are key ingredients in several new dishes.

The best grilled shrimp ever! Served on a bed of quinoa and a side of Keen Green salad.

From a business standpoint, retooling the menu was a risky move that could have alienated Stonefire’s loyal devotees, but that didn’t come to be.  In fact, the new items have invoked new energy, new customers and higher sales overall.

Sometimes, it really is that simple. It’s not a dream, but it is a dreamy way to spend your summer nights. Try one of Justin’s creations and let me know what you think.

Served up with a refreshing Saint Archer Blonde Ale, the Grilled Cauliflower Pita was my favorite!

How I became a “Sports Mom” in a “Sports Loving” Family

by Melissa Reyes on July 24, 2014

We are a Sports Family because we support and love what our children love to do. (Disclosure.)

Senior Day, The whole family was there on the field to support our Varsity Player!

Senior Day, The whole family was there on the field to support our Varsity Player!

When I was approached by to share about how sports brings my family together, my first thought was, “I haven’t really shared much about sports on my blog.”

Then I realized, “Oh, Yes I have!” I share pictures of my kids on the playing field and enjoying the outdoors ALL the TIME! In fact, the more I thought about it, the more I realized my blog is perfect for the  “Family Fanatics” campaign.

Our family really are fanatics and sports enthusiasts. My husband’s favorite competition to watch on TV is the Formula 1  Grand Prix series and we always watch the finals for American Football, Baseball, Basketball, and World Cup Soccer. We never miss the Olympics. My brother follows all sports – seriously, he follows everything from Tennis to Bass Fishing! We are a family of sports fans!  So, how can I share my story of being a sports enthusiast when I, myself,  am not an athlete, and frankly…not a big fan? Well, maybe there are more people like me out there who are the ones watching, shopping for, and learning about all the sports our families love. is my new favorite resource for all things sports related.

I never thought I would be a “sports mom.” It started almost as soon as they could walk. My little boys loved to play and quickly became little athletes. Even though my husband and I weren’t into sports or outdoor activities much, when we had our three sons we knew the importance of team sports and how beneficial participating in outdoor activities would be for them. Hmmm. Let me think. How did we know this?

My sons support each other and have always played together.

My sons support each other and have always played together.

It is true that we were each exposed to some physical activities when we were growing up. Each of us had great parents who encouraged us to try things. My husband played a few years of little league. I spent a few years on a tennis team. We both remember learning to bowl. However, we never considered ourselves the outdoorsy type and definitely were not athletes. In fact, when our first son was born, my husband held him in his arms and lovingly said, “You will never play football.” We had actually discussed this before having children. What he meant was, “I want to protect you from harm and I think football and contact sports are dangerous.”
Watching from the stands and praying that no one got hurt was my role as a Sports Mom.

Watching from the stands and praying that no one got hurt was my role as a Sports Mom.

Is that what sparked the love of football my first son carried with him throughout his life? It is a little ironic that the sport he most wanted to play was football ever since he played flag football for the first time in after school sports in the fourth grade. He was on a team every year since then, sometimes two teams, all the way through varsity football in high school. And, although we were reluctant to let him play and we were concerned about his safety, we quickly learned as parents that supporting a child’s dream and encouraging his natural talents and interests is more important than the idea of protecting him from harm. Yet, we struggled. I especially remember the resistance I experienced when I hesitated to join what I liked to call, “the Church of Football.” Football is a cultural thing. There is so much a parent must do to be involved besides showing up at practice and watching games from the sidelines. But that is another story.

We learned how to be “sports parents” through the wonderful example of my brother and sister. Before we had our own children, we loved going to see our nieces and nephews play soccer, perform in dance recitals, ride horses in rodeos, cheer lead at football games, and do all the fun activities that families do together.
My brother became very involved in A.Y.S.O. and World Cup Soccer when his kids were little. He started as a coach on his son’s team. An athlete himself, and a wonderful teacher and coach, he inspired us and lead the example of what fathers do for their kids. Yet, it was natural for him. He loved sports. He is very outdoorsy. He has been a tennis pro, a sailing instructor, he has taught us all to ski and surf and fish… All my life I witnessed his love of nature and sports. There isn’t anything he can’t do! So, of course he naturally lead the way for his own kids.
My sister, on the other hand was more like me. She loved going to Mammoth Mountain with the family to ski, but realized quickly that part of learning to ski was falling down in the snow and she would have none of that. She taught me the wonderful benefits of the ski resort experience and helped me develop my love of warm fireplaces, scenic views, hot cocoa, and saunas. Never did I imagine that she would become a “Soccer Mom” or a Horse Rancher! She did these things for the love of her children. She was even “Yellow Carded” and banished from the field for disagreeing with the referee and being too aggressive when her son was playing U17 soccer. My sweet sister! When her daughter became interested in horses, I remembered one time when we were young and we went on a trail ride together. She hated it. She promised she would never do that again. And here she was, practically living on a ranch and going to rodeos, boarding horses, and cheering on her daughter in barrel riding and rodeo competitions.
Our family on a trail ride together.

Our family on a trail ride together.

We all became a sports loving family together. So, with three sons who all love to participate in sports, our family has  always been there. My brother and sister-in-law and my sister and brother-in-law have always supported them and encouraged my husband and I to be outgoing supportive parents in everything our kids have been interested in trying. Birthday and Christmas gifts from Uncle John or Auntie Karen were usually sports related. First baseball mitts and footballs were special gifts from family. Later, ski trips and surfboards became the best graduation gifts. All the advice and searching for the best equipment; cleats, pads, helmets and the proper clothing came from the authority in the family, Uncle John. Aunt Jennifer, my sister-in-law, has helped me to understand the rules of the game as we cheered the boys on from the sidelines. An athlete herself and an inspiration to all my boys, I really couldn’t have done it without her support and example through the years. When something like hiking or surfing, which are outside of my comfort zone, requires a mother’s guiding love, she steps in for me. She actually goes with them!

For me, I love watching them grow and excel at everything they try. My sport is being a parent!
And that is how I became a “Sports Mom.” I have the title that encompasses all the sports that my boys have tried.
Here is a list:
Track & Field
Julian, 19 has done all of the above and made football and lacrosse his focus in high school. He longed to continue playing lacrosse in college and made the difficult choice to pursue his interest in architectural engineering over playing on the college level. Still very athletic, he hikes, jogs, surfs and is in an off-road vehicle club in college. His love of the outdoors and his team/brotherhood mentality from football is a part of who he is and has inspired him to choose a career in construction/environmental design.
Colin, 17 is the natural born athlete. He is good at everything he tries. He loves all sports. As a youngster he wanted to be just like David Beckham. We even sent him to the David Beckham Academy! We thought he would play soccer in high school, but after being injured in eighth grade playing football (yes, our worst nightmare!) he played a few years of lacrosse and then picked up tennis and golf. He loves to snowboard and wants a career involving outdoor adventures.
Roman, 14, has tried all the sports his brothers have tried and he loves skiing. Now that he is starting high school, he is pursuing his passion for music and singing. Now, our family will support from the wings and the audience as he performs on stage instead of the playing field.
As parents we do what we do for love.

As parents we do what we do for love.

We are a Sports Family because we support and love what our children love to do.

Let me know what you think of the website and the blog at (Disclosure.)

I was quite impressed with the extensive collection of surf products on the online Surf Shop at SurfFanatics!

I must admit, I love the huge selection of women’s shoes available in the inventory. Why not get a little something for me, right?
