It is Time to SMILE!

I have been waiting for a platform that would easily blend my love of interviewing and socializing via live stream video with the ability to connect directly with my community on Facebook. I have my wish! It’s called Smiletime and it’s awesome!

Here is an Overview of What to Expect on MizMeliz.com this Fall:

Books, Reviews, and Interviews

I will be reading quite a few books in the coming months and I am doing my best to schedule interviews with editors, authors and illustrators. I think it is fascinating that anyone can take their passion or expertise and make it into a book that can open up worlds of possibility for other people. They may never know first hand the impact their book will make on people far and wide and for generations to come. That’s the true power of influence! I’ll be diving into the worlds of Children’s Books, Children’s Technology and Learning, Parenting, Self-Care, Business, Health and Wellness, and Art and Creativity. Whew, that’s a lot! But you know what? These are all of my interests and it’s my blog. LOL! Seriously, if you would like to go on this journey with me, I am happy to share my discoveries!

Children’s Books

  • I am excited for my next interview with Bible Stories Through the Ages Children’s Book Series author, Jann Martin on Tinsel Town Live. On Tuesday, October 18th, I will have Jann as my special guest. Jann is in the group, Writer’s Chat on Facebook. I am looking forward to talking to her about her books and what it is like to publish children’s books. Hopefully, she will read a page or two! Jann just got through her first hurricane watch, and I am glad she is okay. Meet Jann on Tinsel Town!
  • Sally Loves…™ is a popular children’s book series by author and illustrator, Jody Mackey. I hope to talk to Jody about how Sally may have inherited much of her adventurous personality from Mackey herself— as she loves to compete in sports and other activities. She is a woman of many talents such as an Ironman triathlete, a runner, a cyclist, an equestrian and even a golfer. Sports have enriched her life, and so it seems only natural for her to share her experiences and inspire young children to be active through her books.415hpx3tg9l-_ac_ul320_sr250320_

Debut children’s book author Kat Kronenberg says, “it’s important that children feel empowered, and it’s up to us to let them know we support them not matter how big their dreams are.”

  • Kat knows how easy it can be to get bogged down by negativity when pursuing a dream. That’s why she is helping young children realize their dreams through songs, activities, games, and a new book aptly titled Dream Big. I love that phrase and use it often! So, of course I am excited about reading it. It will be fun to see what Kat shares with us on Tinsel Town Live!

Children’s Technology and Learning

  • Studies from The Joan Ganz Cooney Center show that high-quality, educational content delivered through mobile devices has the potential to increase a child’s ability to learn. PlayKids Learn’s UX/UI (a new app) was designed in collaboration with The Joan Ganz Center experts to optimize this learning potential.

Through content that includes Disney Imagicademy games and activities, kids can learn how to draw Mickey Mouse, Olaf, and more through guided tutorials or watch videos with iconic characters like Snow White and Hercules that help guide and teach young ones about the importance of exercise, the magic of creativity, how to make a good bedtime routine, and more. I am working closely with the publicist for this app, I will review it and interview the creators live on Tinsel Town!

Disney's legacy of learning and enriching the lives of families around the world continues with this app.

Disney’s legacy of learning and enriching the lives of families around the world continues with the PlayKids app.

“PlayKids intends to be a learning space and with relevant content like ImagiCademy on board, it helps us to drive this educational experience with quality and safety,” explained Eduardo Henrique, Head of Global Expansion at PlayKids. “Parents know they can turn to us for a safe, educational and entertaining place to laugh, play and learn with their kids.”

  • The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is on a mission to encourage girls around the world to join the tech workforce. We will discuss this topic on an upcoming episode of Tinsel Town because I strongly believe that young people would be encouraged to do what they are passionate about. Why are we all going back to our childhood dreams to fill our bucket lists with things undone? Let’s empower our children to reach for the stars and dream big, now.

Please watch this inspiring video:

Parenting

  • I will be receiving Patty Wipfler‘s LISTEN: Five Simple Tools to Meet Your Everyday Parenting Challenges soon. I am interested in talking to Patty about Hand in Hand Parenting and get her advice on parenting and communicating with teens.
  • Another book on my list is Raising Kids with Accountability by the bestselling father/daughter duo, John Miller & Kristin Lindeen! Their newest book is coming out in late October and I am crossing my fingers that I will get to interview them together! What an amazing experience it must be to write a parenting book with your own father. It almost brings tears to my eyes. I wish my parents knew that I published a book and I wish I had spent more time listening to their advice when I had the chance. Our parents are the only source of inspiration for parenting our own children – good or bad, we learn from them and their experiences. It will be very interesting to discuss this with the authors.

Self Care/Relationships

  • In “My Personal History: My Story,” author Janice Costello entrances readers with the story of how she became her best self. From love to death to rebirth, Costello is able to encourage readers to make the effort to change and embrace the person who is underneath it all. Costello believes in striving toward a greater goal and enjoying the accomplishments that follow. “My Personal History: My Story” holds the memories and journeys of Costello’s life, including the good and bad times. I can relate having gone through a similar journey in my own life. I am interested in reading this book and sharing stories with Janice. Bring some tissue to that episode!
  • Grief is something we all experience at some point in life. Anna Oginsky reminds readers with her new book “My New Friend, Grief” that embracing grief is not only part of life, but it makes us stronger and more appreciative of what we have. This is another subject that is close to my heart having lost both of my parents, my sister, and three of my best friends in a matter of a few years. I have written about grief myself on this blog and in my own book, This is the Sound of My Soul. It will be a bittersweet experience to revisit this topic as we discuss her new book when I have the opportunity to interview Anna. Since dying and death is a part of life, it is important – and I can’t stress this enough – to not only endure but to embrace it. We need to talk about it and prepare ourselves in terms of living each moment with integrity, grace, and love. It is okay to be friends with grief, everyone who has lost a loved one knows that grief is a familiar and often misunderstood “friend.” Those are the kind we should try and get to know better, right?
  • Another heart-wrenching topic is uncovered by Charlotte Canion, author of “You Have To Laugh To Keep From Crying:  How To Parent Your Parents.”  Charlotte joined the Hospice Plus Seniors and Caregivers Expo in Decatur, Texas recently. Multifaceted author and authority on the timely subject, she is preselling her new book at the event.

“We have to love our parents enough to find a way to care for them that is respectful to all of our needs,” said Canion.  “Being able to smile and to see the big picture is one important part of the story.  It’s my pleasure to share my own experience parenting my parents in my new book in the hopes that it helps bring strength to as many families as possible who are facing these challenges.”

When I interview Ms. Canion, I will ask her how her own strength helped her to come up with the solutions she presents in the book. I expect her to share how her inspiration came largely from things she learned from her own family and her Christian faith experiences.  For more information be sure to visit http://www.basketjacket. com/.

  • We may still be weeks away from the holidays, but it’s never too early to start to feel the stress from this “most wonderful time of the year.” In fact, 45 percent of Americans would prefer to skip Christmas (via Think Finance) all together and nearly 1 in 4 people feel extreme stress leading up to the holidays. So often we focus and obsess over giving the perfect gift, playing the perfect host, or making the most perfect holiday dinner – things we believe will make us happy. We reflect and dwell on resentments and on the people and things that frustrated or angered us during the year. We are often consumed by pettiness and completely miss that a new year lies ahead of us. We view ourselves as the center of the universe – referred to as perception disorder – and unfortunately, this is normal human nature for many of us. We all need guidance to develop the tools to appreciate our gifts this holiday season.

I will be hosting a support group on this very topic called, “The Holiday Hullabaloo” for the 2nd year in a row. People need a place to vent and ask questions. Is it normal to hate the holidays? Why can’t I “get into it”?

I am excited about the opportunity to discuss this with Charles G. Hanna, the highly successful CEO, philanthropist and author of the new book, Higher: Awaken to a More Fulfilling Life. Through his firsthand experience and his understanding of human nature, neuroscience, and life management, Charles, for the first time, is revealing his practical and achievable techniques, tips and tools so that everyone can apply the “higher” way and find holiday cheer this year. You will want to see this interview as we dive into the topics that may very well shape the focus of the group this year!

Some of the topics I hope to discuss with Charles include:

  • Tips to get a head start and not let the stress of the holidays creep up on you this year
  • Perception Disorder: What it is and signs you may be suffering from it this holiday season
  • Reaching a Higher State: What this means, and his top techniques that anyone can apply to get there
  • Why he believes happiness is a way of thinking and not the result of great achievement

What about love?

  • I will be interviewing the incredible Mr. Drew Waters (director) about his new film, New Life – it’s about love! Of course, I will ask Drew about his writing and directing process and how it relates to his acting experience. A main topic will be about his feelings about making “good” films with “relatable” characters. I’ve heard that the film NEW LIFE is actually promoting life in Africa and it’s helping support an orphans’ program. We will discuss Drew’s passion and purpose as his story unfolds…

After service in the U.S. Navy, Drew Waters became well known for his three seasons on the Emmy winning series Friday Night Lights. His nearly 60 professional credits include NBC’s Surface, Chase and Victorious, AMC’s Breaking Bad and Major Crimes. Film credits include MAD MONEY, HOME RUN and the critically acclaimed PARKLAND with Paul Giamatti and Marcia Gay Harden. Starring roles include BREAKING THE PRESS, THE REDEMPTION OF HENRY MYERS and THE ULTIMATE LIFE. Drew produced and starred in the films HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT and CHARLIE: A TOY STORY. As producer, his projects include A Tale of 2 Soldiers and Art Junkies, a reality series he also directed for the BBC. Drew co-founded Argentum Entertainment with Erin Bethea.

Drew’s latest venture is the film, New Life. NEW LIFE (Nouvelle Vie) is a film about hope. Benjamin Morton’s life changed forever the day he met the little girl next door.  Ava was and always would be the girl of his dreams. From the innocence of a childhood friendship, through adolescent attraction, their love strengthens and grows. When life takes a turn neither of them expected, their entire future is called into question.  NEW LIFE explores the ups and downs of life and love, showing us that in good times and bad, life can be approached with hope and the opportunity for something new.

Business

  • As we approach 2017, new business trends are quickly taking shape—including globalization. No company set on growth in the New Year can afford to ignore our increasingly borderless world of business. According to globalization and language expert Anna Schlegel, any business can go global, but they won’t all succeed. Now, she has mastered the science of globalization and is revealing the ultimate model for true international success.

“For a company to be truly global, there has to be a globalization master plan, thoroughly mapped out and followed like any other discipline,” says Schlegel, author of Truly Global. “You can’t wing it. The more you understand what globalization is, the more you will see how it can help your company grow and make real money.”

unnamedWhen I interview Anna Schlegel, we will discuss the essence of globalization: what it is, how to achieve it, and how it will establish significant ROI – this is something all people need to understand.  Globalization affects everyone. I am also interested in what Anna has determined to be a global content strategy that will help companies localize to any number of markers and locations. Since I have so many friends with small businesses and startups, I will ask Schlegel what they can do to prepare for international success!

Everyone is a Graphic Designer Online Now @relaythat @canva

Posted on February 4th, 2016 by & filed under Discoveries, Everything Miz Meliz, Product Reviews

It’s as easy as 1,2,3!

I will show you what I use to create awesome graphics. The platforms, like everything else, are changing every day. I did a quick comparison.

Here are my faves:

FotoJet.com

  • easiest to use
  • hot new templates
  • amazing stuff for free
  • great for newbies and anyone who likes to be creative on their blog or in their correspondence
  • geared towards creative collages
  • basic social media templates and sharing

I did this one on FotoJet:

Stars on Tonight

Canva.com

  • free
  • super easy
  • lots of social media templates and layouts to use
  • social sharing
  • ease of payment for one offs or special projects
  • easy to download to different formats
  • Sometimes I wish for more
  • Business level upgrade available
  • NEW! iPhone app! It is really good.

I made this (and most of my graphics) with Canva:

RelayThat.com

  • Not as easy, yet definitely “learnable” and great video training on easy to find front page
  • (I get the feeling their are more men working on the design team, and possibly a little old school in their formatting of the user interface, it’s not all click and drag.) IMHO
  • Extensive, thorough, and exciting!
  • Templates are above an beyond what you want. As if they know what you will want.
  • Affordable PRO level
  • monthly or annual payments (Special Offer, see below and save!)
  • Built in SEO, SCHEDULING, and tagging! (yes, very thoughtful!)
  • Great for bloggers, blabbers, and content creators – because you design your basic graphic and it autofills in varying formats to put in different social media platforms. See image below – just a snippet of possibilities and all I did was fill in one template.

My Coca-Cola Party @Keurig #KeurigKOLD #LiveKOLD #sponsored

Posted on December 27th, 2015 by & filed under Everything Miz Meliz, Product Reviews, See the Video on YouTube

I am over the moon excited to review the new Keurig® KOLD™. Thanks to The Coca-Cola Company for making my Christmas wish come true by sending me a party pack with some fun surprises in time for my Christmas Eve party this year. The Coca-Cola Company provided me with a Keurig® KOLD™ for this review. All opinions are my own. The Coca-Cola Company is not a sponsor, administrator or connected in any other way with this website. See my Disclosure for details on why I share stories like this one.

My Keurig® KOLD™ Experience

CocaCola Melissa and Colin

I am most grateful for my supportive and loving family this Christmas

My Christmas wish this year was to have a fun night of entertaining friends and family at our home with a theme that they would love. In years past we had ugly sweater parties, crazy hat parties, dinner parties, and elegant parties, and they have all been super fun. This year I wanted to make it easy, casual, and Christmassy. I decided on a Red & White Holiday Party.

My husband, Lito, and I hosted twenty guests all wearing our favorite “Coca-Cola colors” and I decorated our home in red and white. We got festive Christmas hats for everyone to wear and I organized a Secret Santa gift exchange. Lito planned the entertainment and the boys helped with the set up. It was your typical family affair!

I served our traditional family Christmas meal of New Mexico Style Posole for dinner, which I made ahead and let stew all day. It was the perfect thing for a cold blustery evening. I also ordered pizza and our friend, Kristen, brought a yummy Greek salad. My sister-in-law, Jennifer, agreed to bring her famous Linzer Torte cookies for dessert. She loves to bake and try new things, so she was up to the challenge when my boys requested that she make a “pie-cake-in” in addition to the cookies.

Lito and the group

Lito and the group

Getting the Keurig® KOLD™ drink machine was just the thing to make this event a celebration. Ice cold soda is what we wanted to serve and this made it quick and easy. It was so much fun to include our friends and family in the taste testing and enjoyment of the machine. We used our Coca-Cola glasses and made it a Coca-Cola Christmas!

The Keurig® KOLD™ is the first personal cold beverage system that makes drinks chillingly cold at a push of a button, just like the Keurig coffee maker does with hot beverages. It makes soda fountain style sparkling and still soft drinks in seconds (well, 90 seconds) right in your own home.

What I loved most about having the machine was the space it saved. Some would say it took up a lot of space because the machine is quite large. But I enjoyed not having to buy and carry cases of cans or bottles of soda, storing them, chilling them, and then filling my recycle bin with the empty bottles. I had enough glasses for everyone, and half-way through the party, I collected the empties, quickly washed them in the sink and used them again. I didn’t have to buy bags of ice either.

Colin, likes things flashy and cool!

Colin, likes things flashy and cool!

When I asked my son, Colin, what he thought of the Keurig® KOLD™, he said, “It was flashy cool and fun for parties!” He felt the drinks tasted the same as their traditional counterparts. He thought the 8 oz size drinks made for better portion control considering that we drink way too much soda here in the U.S.

We had a variety of drink flavors to offer our guests. We were supplied with plenty of Coke, Diet Coke, Fanta Orange, Sprite, Root-beer, and Diet Root-beer for the party. Currently the price for the pods is on the high side. ($5 for 4 pods, each pod makes one 8 oz. drink.) Just like the pods for Keurig coffee did, I expect the price will become more affordable in time. I imagine there will be party packs that could be purchased in bulk.

Alex and Kristen had a chance to talk while tasting a Sprite

Alex and Kristen had a chance to talk while tasting a Sprite

For twenty people, we used about 60 pods. We also served bottled water, coffee, egg nog, and hot cocoa. Had I bought the pods I would have stayed on budget by reducing the extras I usually get for parties that add up, like cheese and olives, and other appetizers and desserts. I kept it simple by asking my sisters for help and keeping the meal very casual. Since soda in bottles and cans is so inexpensive, I feel the need to justify the cost of the pods. Yet, if money isn’t an issue, the drink machine is the way to go for any party. It was effortless, quick, and provided fun, fresh, and excellent quality refreshment for my guests.

Our family had a blast using the Keurig® KOLD™  at our holiday party!

The More the Merrier

Alex and Michael had a blast

Sharing the experience of using the new Keurig® KOLD™ drink maker with my family and friends was such a joy! I wanted to do something fun with the group and bring them all into my blogging life. Not everyone understands what I do or why, yet they try to be helpful and supportive of my endeavors. I am grateful for each and every one of them and not only for what they do to support me, but for how they support their community and other people.

We are a diverse group of friends and family who all love to help others and bring joy all year long to those most in need. This is our way of sharing the joy that we have in our hearts. My brother and sister-in-law both work in fields where they are directly helping people in our community every day. They have engaged their kids and friends to do the same. It was fun to give back and serve the people in my life who are always serving others. Read more about Jonathan Lopez and his work with the homeless here: “Creating Lasting Change”

Having some fun with my family and friends and bringing them into “my world” was super exciting. We shared on social media all of our first impressions of the The Keurig® KOLD™ and Coca-Cola products we tried. We live Tweeted, shared on Instagram, Kanvas, Facebook, You Tube, and even live streamed on Blab!

My Secret Santa sent a box full of Coca-Cola Santa hats for the entire group!

The Keurig® KOLD™ drinkmaker is the perfect party host. If you have ever rented a margarita machine or made smoothies or floats for your guests, you know the joy of serving up a fresh made drink to everyone’s delight. There is so much you can do with this drinkmaker.

Roman was a great host, serving up drinks like a pro

Roman was a great host, serving up drinks like a pro

My son, Roman, loved it! He thought it was cool because he could put the glass down and start it, go do something else, and come back and have his Coke. He was quite the host, serving everyone and showing them how the machine and the pods worked to make fresh chilled drinks.

Roman helped me with all the set up for the party, especially the shopping. He picked out the hats, decorations, and cool Coke beverage glasses. He is a star!

Bree liked it!

In the future we plan to try out other flavors and create new ways to share the Keurig® KOLD™ experience at other theme parties. We want to try the mojito and margarita mixers as well as the teas and other still and sparkling drinks that are available in pods. The possibilities are endless!

Chill Out

It was a blast to chill out with our friends and family while we were celebrating, singing, and having an amazing time with the super chilly satisfying sodas and gourmet pizzas. Check out the video below to see the entertainment portion of the party. (Please subscribe to my You Tube Channel so you can see all of my videos and replays of my live streaming show, Tinsel Town with Miz Meliz.)

Kermit and Adam

Kermit and Adam

My friend, Meredith, hosted the live stream show on Blab for me while we shared the event with our online guests. This is a great way to party with the folks who couldn’t be there in person. Meredith read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas to get the show started. Lito and Roman performed songs from the hit Broadway show, Hamilton, as well as a few Christmas songs. Melissa and Adam Ohl performed a variety of songs and brought a special surprise guest, Kermit the Frog! Meredith graced us with a flawless rendition of O Holy Night as the finale of the show. I will watch this video again and again, it was so wonderful! (If I do say so myself!)

Julian was in the spirit of Christmas and Coke!

Julian was in the spirit of Christmas and Coke!

I asked my son, Julian, what he thought of the Keurig® KOLD™, and he said he thinks of it as a very good novelty machine, but felt that it just doesn’t have every day practicality. Although, he did think it makes a very good Coke. Personally, every day since the party I have enjoyed making myself a refreshing Diet Coke, just like I enjoy my morning coffee – made to suit my taste in a single portion. Knowing that Julian lives at a college frat house, I would think having a self chilling machine to serve up individual drinks would be practical, but what do I know?

Shari enjoyed the entertainment

One concern I always have when I host parties is running out of ice. Our ice-maker always runs out and getting bagged ice from the store poses it’s own issues. It takes up space on the counter to put out an ice bucket, bowl, or chest and the ice makes a mess as it melts. Setting out pitchers or punch-bowls with iced drinks is also a problem because the ice melts and waters down the drink. Having a cold drink to start with eliminates the need for added ice, and if you do add ice – it doesn’t melt fast because it is already chilled.

Drink Up

CocaCola Roman and Lito

Roman and Lito entertaining our guests with song

I wanted to try the Keurig® KOLD™ for many reasons, but mainly to surprise my husband. He is a huge fan of Coca-Cola products. He loves using the Coca-Cola Freestyle and will go out of his way to go to restaurants and movie theaters that feature them. This was his chance to entertain in style, Coca-Cola and Keurig® KOLD™ style.

My husband, Lito, shared with me that his main concern was the time it took to make each drink at the party. 90 seconds seemed like a long time when you want to serve your guests. He felt that although there was a lot of waiting involved, the flavor of the Diet Coke and Fanta Orange was spot on. He liked the ice cold temperature of each drink. It was perfect every time. All in all, he enjoyed the experience and loved the surprise!

Worth the wait? Dave and Jennifer weren't so sure.

Worth the wait? Dave and Jennifer weren’t so sure.

All our guests loved trying the machine and tasting the drinks. The only time I had a problem with the wait time was when I was serving my brother’s father-in-law, Dave. He was so sweet and listened to the whole story of how I came to be reviewing this amazing product at our party. I told him all about it, and then proceeded to demonstrate how quick and easy it was to make a drink. And, we waited and watched. Nothing. apparently the machine was going through a chill cycle or something because we literally waited for over three minutes and I restarted the process. Another minute and a half, which felt like forever, and the drink was dispensed. He drank it, he liked it, but he wasn’t very impressed. The wait time ruined it for him. However, he loved the Fanta Orange!

Jonathan and Jennifer enjoying the diet root-beer

Jonathan and Jennifer enjoying the diet root-beer

One thing that everyone agreed on was the taste of the drinks matched or exceeded their expectations. Everyone has their favorite soda, and we had enough variety to satisfy everyone’s taste. My brother, Jonathan, drinks diet soft drinks, and prefers root-beer. I knew I could count on him and my sister-in-law for an honest opinion.

Jennifer said she loved how cold the root-beer came out, “I usually don’t like ice in my drinks so it was perfect for me and delicious.”

Jonathan really liked the Diet Coke, he said it was “cold, delicious, and sparkly!” He also admitted that he wouldn’t be drinking the diet root-beer again, it didn’t suit him. That was good to know. I thought the diet root-beer was fine, but it didn’t taste like any I had tried before. Like my brother, I loved the Diet Coke!

Thanks again to all of my guests and to the Coca-Cola Company for this fun and wonderful experience! Let me know what you think. Would you try the Keurig® KOLD™ at your next party?

When I met Mark Feldstein, he had driven over an hour from his home to my office just to show me his boxes. He felt very strongly that I needed to see them in order to appreciate them. I found this to be quite interesting. Why would he go to so much trouble? We hardly knew each other. But, when I met Mark, I knew there was something special about him.

Mark Feldstein is a dreamer.

You see, he has a trade. A job. A family. Yet, over the years he and his wife also had an idea. They wanted to share it with the world. They wanted to make a difference in the lives of families everywhere. It wasn’t enough for the Feldsteins to make boxes like these for their own children and friends. They wanted to use them to help others live a life full of fantasy, story, fun, interest, hope, love, and inspiration. They had a dream.

Now, Mark has to make his dream of turning his idea into a business by using his talents and insights, fueled by a desire to bring much needed additional income to the family and driven by the passion he has to change the way families connect and communicate with one another in the technology age. I believe he can do it. He just needs a little help. He needs some help from his friends. Will you help him?

Order your unique box now to receive it in time for the holidays and help an entrepreneur turn his idea into a dream job. Dreams really do come true! Find ALL the details HERE.

Let Go of Negativity and Move On

Posted on August 20th, 2015 by & filed under Discoveries, Everything Miz Meliz, I Love My LIfe, Intentional

This is a re-post, originally published on April 18, 2014

I am in Love! I Love My Life! It isn’t always easy. It’s a choice.

The past has no power over the present moment.Acceptance

I first saved the quotes in this post and started writing it in October 2013. I saved it in a draft file. The topic came up again recently and caused me to revisit it. As I began to write this, the thoughts and ideas sounded familiar to me. When I found the quotes stored in my draft files, I was not surprised that I have had this in the back of my mind. It is an integral part of my message, my core beliefs. This is about Falling in Love with Acceptance and Letting Go of Negativity:

“Always fall in love with what you are asked to accept. Take what is given, and make it your way. My aim in life has always been to hold my own with whatever’s going. Not against: with.” ~Robert Frost

Are you happy? Can you be happy and negative at the same time? I think perhaps some people can. For some, it makes them happy and satisfied to express their opinion openly. It may be the way they choose to live and be. Maybe they don’t want to be stifled. So, I accept that there is a place for what can be perceived as negativity. My eyes have been opened to the fact that saying negative things and having strong opinions either for or against issues does not mean a person is negative or even unhappy. Everyone is free to say what they want to say and feel how they want to feel. That is a part of acceptance.

Is not sharing outwardly your strong negative feelings about things a sign of weakness, or strength? I come from a place of depression and anxiety. I work hard to choose happiness and joy on a daily basis. I have suffered loss in my life. I have overcome major obstacles in my relationships. I have survived tragedy and serious health issues. I have experienced racism, sexism, ageism, and I have been challenged for my religious beliefs. I have been discriminated against for being overweight. I have been called a hypocrite for supporting gay friends. I don’t always fit in. I don’t always agree with the status quo.

What you believe in your heart and what you stand for comes through your actions more so than your words. Anyone can say they believe in something, and you can agree with them. When you choose to make it a core belief, you don’t have to talk about it. You live it. You model the behavior. You walk the talk.

Staying in Control

“You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change, rather than allowing it to master you.~Sri Ram

I choose to believe in hope and I practice unconditional love. Does this make me seem weak and without opinion or position to others who do not know my personal history? It’s something to think about next time you judge someone for what they don’t say. They might be biting their lip and making a strong choice to remain positive.

I have been told that statements I make seem passive aggressive at times. When statements are taken out of context, or perceived by someone other than the intended audience, without background or history – I can see how my statements could be understood to be passive aggressive. It is all in the interpretation of the reader.

I am often so conscientious as to not offend anyone when making a statement, that my carefully chosen wording ends up sounding passive aggressive. I also have a wicked sense of humor that does not come across the written word (unless you know me well.) As a writer, expressing oneself is a learned skill. The bottom line is, I am an honest person. I am careful not to hurt feelings. I prefer not to confront others. I usually let things go. If I decide that I need to say something to someone, I will confront them honestly and privately.

“Passive-aggressive means that a person finds ways to express himself indirectly so that he doesn’t have to admit how he really feels or thinks. Typically, the term is associated with feelings of bottled up anger, but more broadly, it refers to being untruthful about any emotion or desire (passivity) and retaliating against the frustrations arising from being unable to be honest (aggression). Professionals think that, for the most part, acting this way is a coping mechanism that an individual learns over time. With a lack of honesty potentially leading to problems such as relationship conflicts and insecurity, it is usually to a person’s benefit to try to stop the behavior in some way, such as by practicing “I” language.” ~WiseGeek.org

I respect others and their opinions. I don’t often find it necessary to share my own opinions outwardly or publicly. If you want to know what I am about, you can ask me, read my blog or my book. I am open and happy to share my feelings and ideas with you. I accept you for who you are.  Honestly.

Let it Go

Thinking about this reminded me of an app that I was asked to review some time ago. I liked the idea of it, but the app itself didn’t do anything for me personally, so I didn’t review it at the time. I kept it in the draft folder in case I wanted to refer to it – knowing the concept brought up emotions that I wanted to address eventually. (I know that after you read this you will have the song, “Let it Go” in your head, like I do right now. It’s okay. It’s a great song!)

Nate Stein is a 24 year old musician/entrepreneur living in Santa Cruz, CA.  He created a self-help app that he considers to be great for healing.  It started after a break up he had when he was having trouble letting his negative thoughts go.  He said, “There should be an app for this.”  He had never made a mobile app before but after a lot of research and some help from a friend, he created Let It Go.  Here is how he describes the FREE self-help app…

Let It Go allows you to deal with your problems in a unique way. Write down anything that’s bothering you and Let It Go will release the negative thought for you! The releasing process is completely random for each thought and takes between 1 and 72 hours. Live freely and Let It Go! (Disclosure)

“I want people to benefit from my app and utilize it as a helpful tool.  I would love for more people to be aware of the app and most importantly the process of letting something go.” ~Nate Stein

Stand Up For Your Rights

Yeah, but what about standing up for yourself? How about defending yourself and others? What about making a difference? What about fighting the good fight?

letting go

We are called to fight the good fight. It’s our duty to help others. We wouldn’t stand by and let someone get picked on by a bully or watch someone being demeaned in our presence. Sometimes we must speak up. I will speak up and express my concerns when it matters to me or someone I love. There are some things that are unacceptable.

“But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”

I have been inspired by Maya Angelou who does not accept racist remarks or jokes that put others down in her presence. She says, “Not in my house.” And She has actually asked people to leave her home when they crossed the line. I have never gone that far, but I will walk away from a conversation or change the subject if I don’t feel it is appropriate for me. There are some things I will not tolerate in my presence. I don’t always feel up to a confrontation and I am passive in the sense that I don’t feel like I need to correct other people publicly. I am clear about my convictions and I ask that others respect my beliefs.

It Takes Courage To Defend Your Convictions

“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” ~Winston Churchill

Standing up for what you believe in is one of the most important skills you’ll need in life. People in life will always try to knock you down, but as long as you get back up, you’re showing them that you can stand for what you believe in.

I realize that many people agree with the idea of standing up for what they believe in and some call the process, “speaking from their soapbox.”  They want to right the wrongs of society. They want to explain to everyone the correct way of doing things or at least offer their opinion. I think this can be an effective way of getting one’s point across. I have a sopabox I suppose, in my blog. Social media is a sea of soapboxes. Everyone is shouting out what they stand for. Some people flock to listen. Some voices carry loudly far and wide. Some voices float around like a soft whisper.

I have been considering what it takes to be a person of action. I have been told that I am one who “gets things done.” I believe that one person can change the world. I believe that together, we can make a difference. Other than talking about it or even writing about it, what can I do to stand up for my beliefs? I was going to make a list. I Googled it and found a great example:

Here are some Steps from Wiki How:

  1. Believe in Yourself. The first step to getting anyone to believe in you is believing in yourself. Do not let yourself think negatively. If you want to stand up for a good cause, you need to believe that you can make a difference. The ones who don’t make differences are the ones who don’t think they can. Know what you are capable of. Never have doubts in yourself. You are capable of anything as long as you believe you can do it. Don’t listen to others put you down. The only reason why people say that you can’t do something is because they don’t think that they themselves could do it. Prove them wrong. Don’t cave in to their insults, and stand up for what you believe in.
  2. Write it out. Often times, a letter is required to fully get your point across. As an example, if you believe something in the school system should be changed, you will need to contact the principal. Make sure that your letter is persuasive. Make sure you clearly state what you believe in. Add persuasive points, and offer help to complete the task. Seem dignified. Use clever phrasing of words. Show them that you are intelligent, and that you understand what you’re talking about.
  3.  Know what you believe in. Many people don’t realize that they don’t actually know what they believe in. Think it through- Am I doing this because it’s for a good cause? Am I doing this because of a trend? Will I probably still think this way in a few months?
  4. Are you being seduced by someone else’s plight? Do you really think this way? You may actually lie to yourself just so that you believe you are doing it for the right reasons. Only you can determine if you really believe in something, not a trend.
  5. Follow through. Don’t start a petition, and then never hand it in. In order for people to really believe you are serious, you need to show them that you are dedicated. Leave no loose ends. Plan out any presentations, respond to arguments, and don’t waste people’s time. Why would you get everyone worked up about a show if you don’t even have it planned? Don’t get in an in depth conversation with someone discussing your thoughts just to no longer believe in what you did a few weeks later. Remember, you need to finish what you started.
  6. Get help if needed. Some jobs are just too large to accomplish on your own. Inform friends and family about what you’re doing, and tell them to tell others. Another way of doing this is starting a petition. Make sure that what you’re doing is actually for a good cause.

Important Reminders:

  • When you’re talking to a person don’t raise your voice UNLESS you MUST. Get help if needed.
  • Writing a letter or starting a petition greatly improves your chances of people believing in you.
  • Follow through with what you want, or you might as well be wasting everyone’s time.
  • Don’t get too excited. Sometimes, things may not go as planned.
  • Avoid getting into fights with people just because they may believe differently than you.
  • It’s okay to keep your feelings to yourself. Choose your battles wisely.

Source: http://www.wikihow.com/Stand-Up-for-Something-You-Believe-In

Think of positive ways to express your beliefs. Remember, if you can’t say something nice – sometimes it is better to not say anything at all. Choose your words carefully. As Miguel Ruiz says in his book, The Four Agreements, “Be impeccable with your word.”

It is my core value to model positivity and unconditional love. What is your core value? How can you change the world and make a difference by practicing what you believe in a passive way? What do you think?

iClever® Wireless Bluetooth FM Transmitter with Car Charger

 iclever logo
Construction: The plastic doesn’t feel cheap, as if it will break after some usage after time. I can see it holding up well for many years. It’s got a long bendable neck that while very pliable, feels very strong and again doesn’t feel as if it will break anytime soon. I love the fact that you can bend it to any position you see fit. The transmitter itself easily comes off of this bendable neck with a gentle tug, which is great if you don’t feel like leaving it attached while away from your vehicle. The base can be left plugged in while you pull the transmitter off so you can put it in your glove box so that no possible thieves in the area will see it and want to break in to your car. The base of the entire unit has a USB plug which makes it easy to charge your phone or other devices.
Usage: For those folks that don’t have an auxiliary port for their vehicle’s radio (or a USB plug in as most newer cars have now) this is the next best thing. It’s got buttons on the front to skip ahead or go back to the previous song. There is a button on the very top of the device that can pause, play, or even shut off the unit entirely.  There is also an easily adjustable volume knob towards the top of the device that you twist to the right to increase volume and to the left to decrease volume.
There’s a separate dial to turn for changing FM frequencies. The display is easily read on the front even in bright sunlight and is small enough to not be intrusive during night time use. To use this device all you have to do is plug it into your vehicles  power port or cigarette lighter port, activate your Bluetooth on your phone or tablet, and choose to connect to the device within your phone’s Bluetooth menu options. Now you will want to tune into an FM station on your vehicle’s radio that doesn’t have a signal coming thru (you want nothing but static here) and of course tune into whatever frequency you may have chosen here, on the iClever Transmitter. Once you’ve got that dialed in, you’re all set to enjoy any audio coming from your phone, including phone calls. This is probably the best use for this device, as you can use your vehicle’s speakers for hands free phone calls.
Sound Clarity: Music sounds okay. With all FM transmitters you can never really get rid of slight hissing (at loud volumes), slightly lower volume output, and a bit of static here and there.  Music doesn’t sound as good as say a CD or even a hardwired connection, but it’s still decent. like I said, if you don’t have an auxiliary port this is as good as you’re gonna get. In my opinion this unit is best used with phone calls, and podcasts. Neither one needs to be at the highest fidelity to notice any degradation in the audio at all. Overall this device does what it’s advertised to do, and does it quite well.

Stephen Shade

I met Stephen at NMX15 in Las Vegas. I enjoyed listening to him emphatically telling me of his plans for his blog and book on sustainable living. I teased him about how would he reach his niche followers if the goal was to live off the grid. That didn’t phase him. His energy and interest in blogging and using social media to share his views and findings is contagious. Just as I am drawn to the nomadic life, never intending to live that way myself, I am equally fascinated in living independent of society. What simplistic and noble standards to live by. Don’t you think? To support yourself and your family solelyon what you can create and harness from the earth. I look forward to following Stephen, seeing how he reached his goals and giving him encouragement and support.

My Love for Mexican Food is About to Get Real! #MizMeliz @DelRealFoods

Del Real Party In A Box Giveaway Featuring Fresh, Authentic Mexican Foods

Imagine my delight when I received news from Del Real that I could host a give away on my blog for a Party in a Box! (Disclosure)

I recently resolved to not do any more posts on my blog for free and to limit advertising that wasn’t beneficial to me or my own brand. But, I never said I would not work for food! Del Real offered me some free samples and a great gift for one lucky reader, so I am going for it. I don’t even need to wait for the samples to be delivered. I have tried Del Real Foods and I liked it.

I saw this commercial on TV around Cinco de Mayo. It cracked me up!

I love Mexican food, the kind we have here in Los Angeles, that is. I know it isn’t the same as they have in Central Mexico. Or, at least that is what I have been told, I have never been there. I don’t eat it because I am Mexican. (I am “mostly Mexican” by heritage.) I do eat it because my parents liked it and we ate it at home quite a bit. That is because my Dad loved it. It is the same reason my kids love Filipino food. Their Dad loves it. Homemade food and certain foods from restaurants are comforting to us and remind of us of good times.

“Del Real Foods is a family-owned Mexican food company based in Mira Loma, California. Del Real Foods offer authentic taste using the freshest ingredients, most of which are locally sourced. Gluten free and trans fat free, Del Real Foods are cooked over an open-kettle.”

I admit it, I don’t know how to make good Mexican food. I can make a few things the way my Mom made them. She had a deep dark secret that I found out when I wanted to learn how to make her best dishes for my family. Her recipes were not handed down from her mother, or even my father’s mother. She confided that she used the suggested recipe on the side of the can of sauce that she bought at the market to make her enchiladas, and her taco recipe was from the can of beans. (Don’t laugh at me!) I can relate, moms do what is necessary to make things easily as well as wholesome for our families and friends. There is nothing more authentic than that, right?

My mom gifted me with some authentic recipes and the love of foods from the South Western United States since she was from a small town near Albuquerque, New Mexico. My mother, my grandmother, aunts and cousins made sopapillas, carne adovada, green chile stew, posole, cabalacitas, and stacked enchiladas with red or green sauce made from the New Mexico chile (a variety of Capsicum annuum – peppers grown throughout the state of New Mexico.) These foods are family favorites, yet vary quite a bit from the flavors of Mexican food made in California.

Del Real makes it simple to get fresh tasting Mexican food on our table so we can enjoy it quickly and easily. Like the commercial in the video above, you can make it in minutes (and you might not even need hands.)

“Designed to satisfy all palates and promote healthy eating, Del Real Foods refrigerated products offer authentic taste, using the freshest, locally sourced ingredients and cooked with traditional methods for an enhanced dining experience among family and friends.

Del Real Foods refrigerated products include Carnitas, Barbacoa, Tamales, Seasoned Shredded Beef, Shredded Chicken and much more.”

http://www.delrealfoods.com/

You have a chance to sample the flavors, because Del Real is allowing me to give away a grand prize “Party In A Box” featuring Del Real highlights like carnitas, tamales, pork al pastor pupusas and the newest delicious addition: the Al Pastor Taco Kit. The grand prize Party In A Box will also include a Del Real picnic cooler basket, as well as a Del Real blanket. It’ll make for a great fiesta or spring picnic!

Everyone knows I have a little love affair going with tacos! I really like Baja style tacos like the ones at my favorite restaurant, solita’s Valencia. I love making tacos, too. The way I learned how to make them involves frying the corn tortillas in oil to to make the shells. All the fresh ingredients are prepared and served in a separate serving dish and everyone makes their own taco. It takes time to prepare all that stuff. So, I am really intrigued by the El Pastor Taco Kit that Del Real makes. I will definitely try them.

I did a little research on the company and I was so pleased with what I learned. Most importantly, I feel like I can relate to Del Real‘s message and beliefs…and they have a great sense of humor! Del Real Foods products are based on the following pillars:

●      Authenticity: the family strives to create deliciously simple products based on traditional recipes infused with Mexican culture and bold colors. Prepared in an industrial, home kitchen, the products will provide comfort and familiarity.

●      Healthy People: cooked with a safe open-kettle method, the products are made with the freshest, ingredients, most of which are locally sourced. Once prepared, they are ready to enjoy. The products are also gluten free and do not contain any trans fats.

●      Healthy planet and better communities: the company has adopted sustainable initiatives including wastewater management and recycling to help the environment. Del Real Foods has also sponsored local sporting events and made donations to local communities to contribute to their improvement.

20141208_072433usb car charger 2 usb car chargerThis is a must have at $10! Get this for everyone you know. Extrememely nice quality casing, with a glossy finish makes this look worthy of plugging in your expensive devises to charge while you drive. This isn’t a give-away shottzky. It appears heavy duty in style, but it is as compact as they come. You can’t go wrong with this charger. Keep it in the car and charge up your iPhone and an android or other device at the same time. Very fast and powerful. I love it!

But it turned out to just be quite compact when folded. It opened up and is exactly the right size for a desk or night table. All of the features make it stand out and it’s modern design and abilities make it perfect for the young person or tech enthusiast in your house or office.
