How to Get Your Own Alexa Skill or Enable Mine in 3 Easy Steps

Posted on February 19th, 2018 by & filed under Affiliate Links, Everything Miz Meliz, Inspiring Adventures, Theme of the Week

I share the Word of the Week every week. It started last Summer when Allison Diamond of the SnapDays Bot asked me to do this as a regular thing on Snapchat. It is a fun way to start a conversation with friends and utilize my Daily Affirmations Card Deck. This post contains affiliate links and links to purchase items. See my dislosure for details on why I write articles like this on my blog.

I simply pull a random card each week and show the card on Snapchat. That has lead to a wonderful way of expressing my insights and has opened discussions with people around the world through social media. Now, I have an Amazon Alexa Skill that can be enabled (if you have an Alexa Echo or Dot device) in your Flash Briefings and hear the Inspiring Adventures Word of the Week any time you want.

I post an image every week on Instagram and share my thoughts on how the word applies to my life.

Why Do I Want My Own Alexa Skill?

I am a blogger and a live streamer and I host shows on Facebook, but when I started doing the word of the week, it became something that centered all of those things. Using the words from my deck helped me to keep my focus and remain mindful of my core values. My best friend and working partner, Cindy Harrison, asked if we could use the word of the week in her art projects too, and then we started using them as the theme for the live shows. Now, everything makes sense! Inspiring Adventures is the overall theme of everything I do, that is at the base of who I am and what I am doing here, and it always has been.

Why not make Inspiring Adventures my main focus on social media as well? Why not share it with everyone? When I first heard about Flash Briefings, I knew I had to have my message available in that form of media. I was thrilled when the easiest way to activate this goal came to me in an email from online educator, Jen Lehner. She teaches all the cutting edge technology and I have learned many tips from her about OBS, Twitter, Instagram, and now Alexa!

Here is how I activated the Alexa Skill on Amazon:

  1. Go to SoundUpNow.com (this is an affiliate link and I get a kickback if you sign up, thanks!
  2. Set up your skill by following the directions and using the checklist (took me about an hour, if I can do it ANYONE can!)
  3. Upload your own sound file to share with the world, it really is that easy!

Here is how you can Enable Your Flash Briefings and hear the Inspiring Adventures Word of the Week in 3 Easy Steps:

  1. Go to the Amazon Alexa App on your phone
  2. On the Menu (looks like three lines on the top left) select Skills
  3. Where it says “Search all skills” type in Miz Meliz and when Inspiring Adventures Word of the Week pops up, click on it and enable it!

OR simply say this out loud within ear shot of your Alexa device:

“Alexa, Enable Inspiring Adventures Word of the Week on My Flash Briefings”

When you do, this is what you will hear…

I also share the word of the week on the Anchor App, Apple Podcast, Google Play, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Pinterest. Chances are, I am catching you in at least one of those places! And that is the point – to connect with you. These are ways for you to connect back too! I want to hear from you!

This is the best part about the word of the week, it gets people talking and sharing their thoughts and insights. On Anchor, there is the ability to call in, here on the blog, you can type in comments, on social media you can reply with comments, direct messages, or with video messages. If you want to be involved in the Inspiring Adventures Community, I encourage you to join the group on Facebook!

The Day I Met Marilyn Monroe @Ripleys Believe it or Not!

Posted on November 22nd, 2015 by & filed under Affiliate Links, Everything Miz Meliz, sponsored

I love adventures like going to Hollywood Blvd. and checking out some of the tourist attractions. This post contains affiliate links.

Please see my Disclosure to find out more about why I write posts like this.

One fun Hollywood attraction that I really like is Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Ripleys gave me free admission to visit in exchange for a honest review.  Check out my photo gallery below and you will see how much fun I had there. The thing I liked best was all the unusual artwork. Check out the gallery of photos that I took:

Heat Wave – or Not?

When I went to Ripley’s Believe it or Not in Hollywood, California it was a blast! There was such a boiling hot heat wave in Hollywood that day, I just wanted to sip a cocktail and cool down. I ended up going to check out Ripley’s with a few of my girlfriends from the Entertainment New Media Network Conference. We had a few hours to kill, so we went to check it out. It was pretty cool inside – air conditioned as well as a cool exhibit – if you like weird things.

I like unusual things, so I enjoyed it quite a bit. It is your basic museum/gallery. We went in and toured at our own pace. Naturally the theme of Hollywood film and television memorabilia seemed to be the focus. I don’t know if the Ripleys Believe it or Not’s other locations have nearly as many celebrity influenced artwork and memorabilia. But it made it a lot of fun!

All the pieces are labeled and have plaques or posters describing what it is and how it was obtained. Most items are donated. Many of the items were from around the world or were replicas of sculptures or artwork. Many of the things looked like a perfectly normal objet d’art, until you looked closer and realized what was so strange about it to get it a prominent placement in the museum. For example, the beautiful jeweled peacocks made entirely from fingernails, 1750 of them! (okay, fake fingernails and barrettes, but still.)

2015-09-10 17.07.39

Most of the paintings and wall art were made mosaic style out of odd bits such as candy, puzzle pieces or postage stamps. Throughout the museum you will find these oddities and some are so unbelievable, the question will actually be posted nearby…Believe it, or not? Now and then a hoax will be discovered and revealed in the small print. So don’t always believe what you see!

My absolute favorite part was the Marilyn Monroe room where there were rare photos and memorabilia of Marilyn’s’ including a makeup case. A life size poster suitable for selfie taking with the infamous starlet was in the corner and you could stand next to it on a vent that blew air straight up. Next time I go there, I will wear a skirt for the full effect!

Me and Marilyn! Believe it or not!

Why We Love Our Pets #sponsored @beyondpetfood

The Truth About Pets is Our Love for them Goes Beyond Friendship with a Unique Bond.

This is a Sponsored post by Lunchbox. This post contains affiliate links. Read my full disclosure to learn why I write blog posts like this.

My Cats Mean the World to Me

I have had a cat as a pet since I moved into my first apartment when I was 20 years old. (If you do the math – that’s 27 years!) My mom would never let me have a cat because she was afraid of them. I always wanted one. My first kitten was adopted at a local pet adoption day at a pet store. His name was Quartz and he was the sweetest Russian Blue cat ever!

I enjoyed taking care of my cat, Quartz, and he gave me more love than I could ever give him. He used to lick my arm when he would snuggle up to me. I didn’t think that was unusual, dogs do that all the time. But I was told by a friend that cats only do that if they really like you. That was one way he showed me love. Little scratchy kitty kisses. Over the years, I have had many more cats. They show me they love me in countless ways and I can’t imagine a life without having a wonderful furry pet to love.cat

Why We Love Our Pets

I asked my friends what they love most about their pets and I got so many wonderful responses, I want to share them with you:

The best thing about having pets is…They teach me how to be happy about being. ~Lee

The best reason to have a dog is...A dog is ALWAYS happy to see you whether you are gone for one minute or one month. They love unconditionally. They don’t care what you look like EVER. ~Ronda

Keegan learning how to crawl - who does he go to? Patient, loving, little "Honey"

Keegan learning how to crawl – who does he go to? Patient, loving, little “Honey”

The best thing about having a pet is…My dog, Maddie, is my best friend. ~Shaun

I just love being greeted at the door with such enthusiasm! ~Sue

I love having a pet because…When I am feeling down or sick, my dog, Banjo, tries to make me feel better. He does everything he can to make me feel loved. He licks me to death, wants me to hold him, and lays beside me to make me feel better. ~Charles

I love having dogs because they are loyal to a fault, they love to play and snuggle, they re trustworthy and they will love you until the end of their days if you treat them well…and sadly even if you don’t.

Cats are the epitome of indifference and
then my cat, Puzzle, comes along and she is funny, and playful, snuggly and fun. I think pets are important. They are like our children. They depend on us to take care of them and in return they give us all the love we can handle. ~Valyrie

Erwins petsHaving a cat AND dog is great because... When our cat yacks for whatever reason our dog eats it right up…because it tastes like cat food. Sounds gross, but not having to wipe up cat yack for 10 years, you start to appreciate it. Haha! Cats you can leave at home, while on a short 2-3 day staycation. A dog you can’t leave in the house for > than 8 hours. Dogs are forever happy and loyal, Cats are loyal until they don’t need anything from you anymore. Cats clean themselves, Dogs need baths, Dogs make you active, Cats cuddle. ~Erwin

My dog gives me…Therapy. Companionship. ~Nani

My dogs give me…Unconditional love…and the meaning of the same when things are tough with two legged people in our lives! ~Kerry

I love having pets because…They are never in a bad mood, always happy to see you, they are great protectors and love to cuddle. ~Sharon

My pets give me…Unconditional love, comfort, curling up next to me, they don’t talk back or reveal things told in confidence. ~Cheryl P.

I love having pets becauseWhen you come home and see the dog’s tail wag that is actually a full body wag! The cat’s warm body curled up on your chest, purring. ~Laura

I love having pets because…They are like our children. For some people a cat or dog becomes their child. We love our animals and bond with them. ~Tina

The best reason to have a dog is…unconditional love and companionship. Security! No one comes near our home without the bark alarm going off. Clean kitchen floor. Anything falls, it gets eaten. Comic relief. ~Marissa

My dogs give me…Unconditional love and devotion! ~Cheryl L.

How I Show Love for My Pets

Taking care of your pets is as important as taking care of yourself. In fact, taking care of your pets IS taking care of yourself. It is good for you. So make it a double spa day. Drop Fido off at the groomer’s and go for a massage. You will both feel wonderful!

I honestly feel the best thing I can do for my pets is feed them well. I try to give them healthy food that is good for their digestion. Since my cats are indoor pets, I make sure they are getting all the nutrients that they require. I also give them lots of water. It took a long time to find a food brand that all three of my cats enjoyed, and then narrowing it down to flavors they all like was even harder. Here is one that they love…Purina Beyond.

Purina Beyond Dog and Cat Food contains natural ingredients that are good for your pets.

It’s not simply a matter of natural ingredients. It’s the expert formulation of those ingredients and the knowledge they’ve been sourced from trusted suppliers that ensure you’re feeding your pet a meal that is both naturally and nutritionally complete. Superfoods are not just for people. Studies have shown that the nutrients in superfoods like pumpkin and cranberry are good for our pet’s digestion and overall health. We care about our own health enough to include these foods in our diet, we should be doing the same for our beloved companion animals.

6. Inspiration can be Found at Breakfast…or Lunch

The Most Important Meals of the Day Start at Sangers & Joe:

A Globally Inspired Café Just Opened in Old Town Pasadena

Just in time for a warm and blustery Pasadena autumn, Old Town Pasadena welcomes a new neighbor to the beautiful brick-clad historic community. Introducing Sangers & Joe, a vibrant and inviting breakfast, lunch and brunch cafe boasting tasty intercontinental-inspired dishes and beverages opened Thursday, October 15th, 2015.

“Sanger,” Australian lingo for sandwiches and, “Joe,” meaning coffee, of course, combined to create a modern and airy market-style cafe featuring a myriad of tasty breakfast, lunch and brunch dishes, alongside coffee, tea, natural sodas and even a handful of beer and wine options. “The name itself reflects a casual eatery,” says Managing Partner Scott Kay. “We really wanted to create a community-based café that locals will love.”

“When it comes down to it, it is not just about opening a cafe,” says Kay. “The inspiration stems more from partnering and connecting with the community.” And that mantra is just what Sangers & Joe is all about: an approachable neighborhood café for breakfast, lunch and brunch (and dinner… stay tuned!) that offers something for everyone in a warm and welcoming environment.

Sangers & Joe is open every Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, every Saturday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm and every Sunday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. For more information, please visit www.sangersandjoe.com or call Sangers & Joe directly at 323.553.0563.

Show Notes

I asked Suzette about what she likes to do when she isn’t blogging.

We love to watch movies. After my children left home, and now empty-nesters, my husband and I rounded up our other empty-nesting friends and formed a Friday Night Film Group. Practically every Friday night, eight of us, four couples, meet at our local theater and watch the latest releases. We then have dinner together to talk about our film selection. We are sort of Open Table Film Critics!”

When I inquired about her favorite project, she told me about her new book…

“I am about to publish my first book, “101 Movies To See Before You Grow Up” I think it would be good to tell people about how this book came about, and most importantly how I came up with this list!

I gave 101 Movies to See Before You Grow Up a Five Star Review!

It is a great list and I love the way the book is put together. It is colorful and the illustrations depicting the iconic characters of each movie are delightful. The information is displayed in an easy to read and understand format, being that the book is for young people. However, I found it informative and entertaining to read. Suzette gives a very consistent and thorough listing of what I would call my all time favorite films. They are certainly the ones that I grew up seeing and hope to see again and again. ~Melissa Reyes

When I asked Suzette what she is most passionate about, she said, “Entertainment, how media affects children and our family values, travel, college, and my book, of course!”

I wondered where she and her friends like to hang out. “We usually head to the Grove and to Santa Monica. We love to walk around the promenade in Santa Monica, and try to eat at a small Italian restaurant on Montana called Locanda Portofino. It’s a tiny place that my boss/friend Sharon Waxman introduced me to.”

We will talk about these things and more on Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town!

Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town with Jeffrey A Barnes @DrDisneyland

Posted on September 27th, 2015 by & filed under #SPARKLE Tinsel Town Tonight Interviews, Affiliate Links, Books, See the Video on YouTube, TenMiniTT 2015

On this episode of Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town, I have the pleasure of introducing you to Mr. Jeffrey A. Barnes, the author of the new book, The Wisdom of Walt: Leadership Lessons From the Happiest Place on Earth. Jeffrey is a Disney historian and even teaches a college course on the History of Disneyland.

You may know, I love Disneyland and everything to do with Walt Disney. I was happily surprised to get to see Dr. Disneyland himself, Jeffrey A. Barnes, speak at the Entertainment New Media Conference this month in Hollywood, CA. He told his amazing story about how he overcame the odds and was able to write and publish his book. He is a talented story teller. He has a special way of bringing you along on his journey.

11870745_850356798379172_3841608876313040947_nJeff loves Disneyland, and he is also a huge baseball & football fan. He loves to travel, visit baseball stadiums, and play video games. Jeff and his wife have a wonderful family and would seem to have the classic fairy-tale life. But, like the Disney stories we all know and love, it didn’t come easily. When Jeff had the chance to start teaching his most beloved topic, the history of Disneyland which he had been preparing his whole life, he was given the news that he had a brain tumor and needed surgery within days. When he realized the recovery from the surgery, even if it was benign, would jeopardize the class from taking place, perhaps ever – you won’t believe what he did.

Find out about how it all came together and resulted in the publishing of his dream project, The Wisdom of Walt:  Leadership Lessons from The Happiest Place on Earth  in my interview with Jeffrey on  Blab.im and Meerkat.

Please join me and the author of The Wisdom of Walt, and find out how Disneyland can inspire and motivate each of us to live a great story and be the best possible version of ourselves.

Which Celebrity-ProDancer Pair Makes You Happy?

The MizMelizDWTSREPORTThe Miz Meliz DWTS Report – Season 21

by Melissa Reyes
September 2, 2015
Los Angeles, CA

I watch DWTS every season. Sometimes religiously, sometimes not so much. I love the last month of competition when the dancing gets phenomenal and the entertainment is hot! Since I discovered live streaming I haven’t watched TV as much. That may be because there hasn’t been anything that has interested me since I started viewing and streaming on Meerkat and Blab since Memorial Day. Now that Labor Day is approaching and the Fall Season of shows are beginning to make their way to my living room…I can’t miss my Dancing! It is practically live, right?

I really want to see the showdown between Chaka Khan and Gary Busey…how about you?

Some of my favorite celebrities are contestants in this 21st season of Dancing with the Stars. I have loved Chaka Khan forever. I hope she sings on the show. I am sure she will. I bet she has some moves too! Show me how you do it Chaka! Chaka Khan…it feels so good!

This season of Dancing with the Stars sounds like fun! I am really excited about it.

I bet seeing Paula Deen dance and wear those crazy costumes will be…interesting. Entertaining, for sure! If she cooks for everyone and adds lots of buttah…well, that’s what I am talking about!

Here is the official line up, with pairings, announced this morning:

Andy Grammer—Allison Holker
Alexa Vega—Mark Ballas
Bindi Irwin—Derek Hough
Chaka Khan—Keo Motsepe
Paula Deen—Louis Van Amstel
Hayes Grier—Emma Slater
Nick Carter—Sharna Burgess
Carlos Pena—Witney Carson
Gary Busey—Anna Trebunskaya
Alek Skarlatos—Lindsay Arnold
Victor Espinoza—Karina Smirnoff
Tamar Braxton—Val Chermovskiy
Kim Zolciak—Tony Dovolani

Who are YOU most excited about?

I think the pairing of Derek Hough and Bindi Irwin makes me the happiest. I just loved that little girl and now it will be fun to see her as a young lady. What better way to present yourself to the world than on the dance floor in the arms of the sweetest and most amazing dancers in the the world. He is pretty cute, too!

Do you have any predictions? Who do you think will take home the mirrored ball trophy?

Which celebrity do you think will be the “funnest” to watch? (Note – not funniest…but you can tell me that as well.)

Which celebrity – dancer pairing makes you happy?

In preparation and for promotion – of course I couldn’t wait to extend an invitation to the group to be on my show, Ten Minutes in Tinsel Town!

Let me know if you can attend the reading at the Tongue & Groove in Hollywood on Sunday, August 16th. Be sure to say “Hi Miz Meliz!” if you see me there!

iClever® Wireless Bluetooth FM Transmitter with Car Charger

Construction: The plastic doesn’t feel cheap, as if it will break after some usage after time. I can see it holding up well for many years. It’s got a long bendable neck that while very pliable, feels very strong and again doesn’t feel as if it will break anytime soon. I love the fact that you can bend it to any position you see fit. The transmitter itself easily comes off of this bendable neck with a gentle tug, which is great if you don’t feel like leaving it attached while away from your vehicle. The base can be left plugged in while you pull the transmitter off so you can put it in your glove box so that no possible thieves in the area will see it and want to break in to your car. The base of the entire unit has a USB plug which makes it easy to charge your phone or other devices.
Usage: For those folks that don’t have an auxiliary port for their vehicle’s radio (or a USB plug in as most newer cars have now) this is the next best thing. It’s got buttons on the front to skip ahead or go back to the previous song. There is a button on the very top of the device that can pause, play, or even shut off the unit entirely.  There is also an easily adjustable volume knob towards the top of the device that you twist to the right to increase volume and to the left to decrease volume.
There’s a separate dial to turn for changing FM frequencies. The display is easily read on the front even in bright sunlight and is small enough to not be intrusive during night time use. To use this device all you have to do is plug it into your vehicles  power port or cigarette lighter port, activate your Bluetooth on your phone or tablet, and choose to connect to the device within your phone’s Bluetooth menu options. Now you will want to tune into an FM station on your vehicle’s radio that doesn’t have a signal coming thru (you want nothing but static here) and of course tune into whatever frequency you may have chosen here, on the iClever Transmitter. Once you’ve got that dialed in, you’re all set to enjoy any audio coming from your phone, including phone calls. This is probably the best use for this device, as you can use your vehicle’s speakers for hands free phone calls.
Sound Clarity: Music sounds okay. With all FM transmitters you can never really get rid of slight hissing (at loud volumes), slightly lower volume output, and a bit of static here and there.  Music doesn’t sound as good as say a CD or even a hardwired connection, but it’s still decent. like I said, if you don’t have an auxiliary port this is as good as you’re gonna get. In my opinion this unit is best used with phone calls, and podcasts. Neither one needs to be at the highest fidelity to notice any degradation in the audio at all. Overall this device does what it’s advertised to do, and does it quite well.
