Benefit BBQ Competition and Festival @AFHUSA #RPWBBQ2016

I sampled (okay, pigged out on!) some amazing BBQ and beer at the American Family Housing event in Huntington Beach yesterday. You can still make it out there and enjoy a day at the beach, the best competition barbecue, and beer from BJ’s Brewery until 5 pm today. Plus there is a classic car show and music festival!

You know how when you go to a fair, anything goes when it comes to eating and trying new things? Pretty much everything imaginable is offered on a stick, right? Well the Ribs Pigs and Watermelon BBQ has all the others beat! Hands down. The best corn on the cob, slow cooked wrapped in bacon skewered and dipped in drawn butter.  Oh Em gee! I have gone to Heaven!! Bacon Heaven!

A very close second to the bacon wrapped corn on a stick was the Waffle Cone filled with Mac n Cheese, BBQ Pork, Mashed Potatoes and BBQ Sauce! Ah-maze-ing!

My absolute favorite is a good ole baby back rib. And Team Awesome did not disappoint! This was so good, I wanted to keep gnawing on that bone all day. I didn’t use the word, “awesome” the rest of the day because that one rib owned it! Definitely the most awesome ribs ever!!

To wash down all the BBQ was beer sponsored by BJs Brewery. I loved the Blonde Ale (I was blonde for a few weeks this summer so I felt entitled!)

All the proceeds from the event goes to an amazing effort by the American Family Housing organization to provide sustainable homes for homeless veterans. It’s not too late to make it out to Huntington Beach and support the American Family Housing event!

AMERICAN FAMILY HOUSING PRESENTS:
Ribs, Pigs & Watermelons BBQ Competition, Music Festival and Car Show
5th Annual Event to Support Homeless Veterans and Families in Southern California

WHAT: Ribs, Pigs & Watermelons – Pro BBQ Competition, Music Festival and Car Show is a fundraising event for American Family Housing (AFH) that raises awareness and critical funds to support homeless veterans, families and individuals in Orange, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties. With 35 of the top nationally ranked professional BBQ teams competing, this event is more than just a culinary extravaganza. New this year is an all-day reggae festival on Saturday, featuring some of California’s best reggae bands: Pato Banton and the Now Generation, Arise Roots, CAL1FA, Special Blend and others. Friday night’s music features country bands, and Sunday will showcase classic rock bands. Other activities for the entire family include a classic and hot rod car show, kids activities, watermelon- and rib-eating contests, live music, craft beers and the nation’s best BBQ all weekend long.

WHY: While many areas of our country are experiencing decreases in the numbers of homeless veterans, Southern California is seeing an unsettling and unacceptable increase. Bleak as this may sound, there is still hope, and AFH plans to take the lead with Potter’s Lane, an innovative project in Midway City that will provide energy-efficient and sustainable housing for chronically homeless veterans.
