A Special Day in My Life

Posted on November 26th, 2013 by & filed under Everything Miz Meliz

This Saturday is a very special day for me as I will be celebrating a milestone. I am sure you have heard by now that I wrote and self published a book. It was a big project for me that I set my sights on soon after I started blogging. I am so very grateful for the opportunities that made that dream a reality!

The book itself is simple and not everyone will like it. It is a work of non-fiction and is basically a collection of my blog posts and quotes. Each chapter stands alone with my personal observations and insights at the focal point. However, it represents so much more to me. Strung together and read from beginning to end, my book expresses how I made a personal transformation. It is the cornerstone of my life’s ambition. It is just the beginning.

I am excited about the location of the celebration that is to be part book signing and part gathering with friends. I first visited this place on the very day that I made a formal commitment to writing a book. I was there with my blogging friends and I was asked by Carolyn West what my blog goals were. Once I told her my plan, I was fully committed. I cried and smiled big all the way home that day! I knew that I was moving towards something important and that I could rock it! As they say, I was ready for this.

The blog post about that event is in my book. You can read all about that and see pictures from my experience here: My Multi-level Experience in East L.A.

My family has been looking forward to seeing this place that I have been talking about. I wish it were closer to my home because I would go there every day. It is a quaint cafe next door to La Soledad Church. It is called Coffee and Crepes by Vicky. Their crepes are the best I’ve had! The atmosphere and ambiance is old worldly. It makes me think of my heritage. I can imagine my grandparents going there. I am not sure what the building was before it became a cafe, but it seems like it has been there forever. My family lived in this part of town when my parents were in high school and just meeting for the first time. I can imagine them there.

Victoria Chavez-Calderon is the owner of Coffee and Crepes by Vicky. She could be one of my aunties! Humble and hard working, she is active in the community and is always running a mile a minute. When I wanted to have my celebration at her cafe, all I had to do was ask. On the same block is the Colibri Boutique, which I also mention in my book. If you attend the event, please take some time to stop by this gift shop and take a look at the adjacent art gallery. Recently Lito and I had a chance to visit with Ophelia Esparza, owner of the Colibri Boutique, and were enchanted with her expertise on Mexican American heritage. Both Victoria and Ophelia are treasures to the community!
